I just got a WD Gold 2TB on Amazon, I wanted this drive specifically because of the performance (200MB/s according to spec sheet and user reviews). Once I got the drive I quickly checked with crystal disk info to see the online hours and ensure it is new, it is. I ran crystal disk mark and the speeds were disappointing. I was getting no more than 130MB/s on read and write with crystal disk mark. I tried version 6.0.2 and 6.0.0 as tested by one of the Amazon reviewers who hit 200+MB/s. I tried three different SATA cables and even plugged it into a different machine, although the second one was running linux so I had to reformat it with ext4, it got 100MB/s. Is there a drive lottery kind of like the silicon lottery or am I missing something? Western Digital does have software to update firmware, but it needs a USB adapter, I ordered one it'll be here in a couple of days. Anyone have any incite on this?

Solution
Your latest HD Tune test suggests that the drive has 6 heads. This is confirmed by WDMarvel.

In WDMarvel you would perform a full resource dump (ROM and SA modules), but you already have more than enough information to prove that the drive is a fake.

My WDFAKCHK tool says that the DCX is not a match, so the counterfeiters couldn't even fake the label correctly.
Can you show us a HD Tune read benchmark graph?

Your drive is spinning at 5400 RPM. It appears to be a fake.

Could you show us a photo of the label? What are the DCX, R/N and full model numbers?

Check your model and serial numbers at WD's warranty page:

https://support.wdc.com/warranty/warrantystatus.aspx

Can you post a photo of the PCB? What are the 2060-nnnnnn and 2061-nnnnnn numbers on the PCB?

Can you repeat the HD Tune read benchmark, this time by using the short stroke test? This will tell us how many heads it has.

How to determine number of heads using HD Tune:

You can use the Windows Snipping Tool to capture a screenshot. Otherwise use the PrtScn button:

where is mentioned that its running on 5400rpm? it could as well be running in ide mode (133mb/s limit while higher latencies)

I got what you requested, however I was unable to run the fake drive program, windows doesn't like it.

The warranty status page says "out of region" if I choose USA, so that is inconclusive.

The PCB number (2060-771698) was used in the WD20EARS-00MVWB0 model which is a Green 5400 RPM drive.

The R/N on label is 800032 which implies that the real PCB is 2060-800032.

The label was swapped, not the PCB.

Could you run the HD Tune short stroke test again, this time using 2GB rather than 12GB? It looks like your drive has 2 heads, which would suggest that it is a WD10EARS.

https://www.hdd-parts.com/13021811.html

You could also use WDMarvel to dump the drive's firmware. This will provide conclusive proof of its real identity.

Not entirely sure how to dump it's fireware, but according to 'Drive Info' it's definitely not a 2TB Gold:

Alright, I'm returning the drive to amazon. Gonna make sure if someone else gets this drive they'll know it's fake. Thanks for the help!

Seller is Viixim on amazon.
It appears that Amazon is the supplier:

https://www.amazon.com/sp?seller=AFBBO31CVO806

I was supposed to receive a Western Digital 2TB Gold, without looking too close that's exactly what it looks like. But infact the drive I received was a 700GB WD Green 5000RPM, the label was swapped to make the drive look like a Gold drive. I don't know if it's this seller doing this or if it's where they get their drives, either way do not buy from this seller.
