What did I break?
Hey all, so recently my PC wouldn't boot. I had a POST beep, all fans spun up, but no output to the monitor, tried switching the psu and monitor cables and they're not the problem, have tested monitor and it works fine with my laptop so the problem is my PC. I suspected a PSU problem because it's an 800w unit of a nameless kind of brand.
I opened the case to check everything was seated correctly, noticed something called "pwr_fan" wasn't plugged in so I plugged what I now realise was a 'floppy'? cable into it. When I pressed the power button there was a puff of smoke in the case and a burning smell, but I can't visually see anything wrong with the front side of the motherboard, I can't get around to look at the back because some metal panel-thing is in the way.
I unplugged that floppy thing from the pwr_fan 3 pin thing, and tested to see if everything 'worked' like before. All the fans spun up and the motherboard made its post beep, but still no monitor output.
At this point I took it to the repairs shop, they tried out a graphics card and it apparently worked fine and booted to desktop (I wasn't there to verify), I guess they have no reason to lie about it.
So I ordered a new gfx card, my gtx480 was quite the power hog so I expected anything else would be fine seeing as the computer worked at the shop with one they put in temporarily.
So I put in my new r9 270x today, again, I'm certain I've installed it correctly, the fans spin up and motherboard beeps (albeit after around 30-40 seconds) however there is still no output to my monitor.
Would you think this is a power supply problem or a dead/dying mobo? At this point I'm fairly certain the graphics card wouldn't be the problem.
