I have the Brother MFC-L2740DW printer/scanner connected to a wireless network - Linksys b/g/n. My PCs on the network would show it offline after some number of days. The printer would indicate it was online. Turning off the printer and restarting had no effect. Restarting the router would let me access the printer again - but it would then show offline after some number of days. Going into the router config, the printer would not show up in the DHCP table even though I could print to it. Several calls to Brother support. They try to be very helpful - BTW. Was given several things to try such as configuring IP v6 on the printer and setting a static address on the printer. Brother said that they only operate on the 2.4 band and that they thought the problem was my PCs were on the 5 band and couldn't talk to the device. I think my support person does not understand networking as I think the "router" will route the traffic regardless of which "radio" it is using to communicate with the device. The fix (for me) was to reserve a static address for the printer in my Linksys router's DHCP table. THEN - go though the Settings menu on the printer and RESET the Network Card on the Printer. The existing settings survive the Power-off, power-on cycle, so the Network card on the printer needs to be reset from the Settings Menu.

Hope this is helpful to folks.

It seems like I print fewer and fewer documents nowadays. I generally "print" to a PDF and store the document on my computer, or email to someone. Occasionally I will print out a recipe, although I could save it to a tablet.

I probably use the scanner function of my Brother MFC more than the printer function. I don't think I have ever faxed anything to/from it in the 4+ years I have had it. I am still on the original toner that came with it, although it was showing as almost exhausted. I bought a replacement toner from MicroCenter, installed it then re-installed the starter toner cartridge and that seemed to reset the page counter on the original.
I have a Brother MFC 7360N that occasionally does not print when it hasn't been used for weeks. Mine is connected via ethernet cable directly to my router. It doesn't show as offline, it just doesn't print. On the printer's lcd screen it says "deep sleep". Powering the printer off and then on brings it back to life. I just have to be careful to clear the print queue in the event I tried to print the document multiple times, so I don't get multiple copies of the document once the printer is back working.

I have had this issue also - where the printer just didn't wake up. Pressing the power button does bring it back to life and I do not need to do anything to get it to reconnect to the network. As you said, make sure you have cleared your print queue. I wasted about 7 pre-printed checks that were loaded into the paper tray. In general, I really do like the Brother Laser printers and scanners, and have found that their phone support tries to be helpful and patient, even if they are sometimes ill-informed about networking issues.
