BSOD: Whea uncorrectable error

Good day,

I have a four year old pc that I built and over the course of six months my computer would freeze randomly (mouse pointer stuck and I would be forced to reboot). I didn't do anything about it, because I was lazy and thought it was only a small nuisance, but now I am paying the price for it.

Yesterday, the pc would freeze like usual, but after reboot, the pc would reboot itself either on the startup loading screen or even at the advanced startup menu. While being stuck on this loop of the pc rebooting by itself, once in a while a bsod with the messsage "whea uncorrectable error" would come out.The only way to fix this is by unplugging the pc and it will run as usual after that.

I was reading that this error is caused by hardware failure so I ran Windows memory diagnostic and Passmark DiskCheckup and no errors were found. I still need to test the gpu, mobo and cpu, but I rather get some help first though.

Cheers :bounce:

Solution
this file - AsIO.sys - can cause WHEA errors. It is an Asus driver that can change values on the CPU. Its part of Asus AI Suite or GPU Tweak 2. I would remove it if you have either programs installed.

its unlikely to be CPU given PC was on for 2 hours before you got error.

the 3 drivers above were just new to us, it isn't a sign they are wrong or anything. I see its a Studio Audio application, and hardware associated with it?

Any new hardware recently?
WHEA (Windows Hardware Error Architecture) errors are called by the CPU buit not necessarily caused by them
Can be caused by:
Over heating (so clean PC of any dust in heatsinks)
Over clocking (so remove any you might be running)
Over clocking software - Things like AI Suite (asus motherboards), Intel extreme Tuning Utility, MSI Afterbutner - remove any of these you might have
Almost any hardware (which makes them fun to fix)

Try running memtest86 on your ram, one stick at a time, up to 8 passes. Any error count higher than 0 is too high, remove/replace any ram sticks with errors.

What are specs of PC?

Testing CPU comes down to 2 choices,
This if you have an intel - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool
This if you have AMD - https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/prime95-download.html

GPU - https://benchmark.unigine.com/

Motherboard... About that, MOtherbaord/PSU are hardest parts to test, only real option with them is use a spare and since most people don't have spares for either, its at this stage I would suggest getting PC repaired by a shop who do have working spares that know work, to troubleshoot with... we aren't here yet, check other parts first.

Can you follow option one on the following link - here
and then do this step below: Small memory dumps - Have Windows Create a Small Memory Dump (Minidump) on BSOD

that creates a file in c windows/minidump after the next BSOD
copy that file to documents
upload the copy from documents to a cloud server and share the link here and I will get someone to convert files so I can read the results.

Dump files might let us narrow in on cause as well.

PC Specs:

Built in 2014

CPU: AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 8-Core 4.0GHz (4.2GHz Turbo)
Motherboard: ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB)
Storage: Western Digital Blue 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5
Graphics: Radeon R9 270X

Hi, I ran the dump file through the debugger and got the following information: https://pste.eu/p/6R46.html

File: 090218-34796-01.dmp (Sep 2 2018 - 15:02:30)
BugCheck: [WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (124)]
Probably caused by: AuthenticAMD (Process: chrome.exe)
Uptime: 0 Day(s), 2 Hour(s), 09 Min(s), and 03 Sec(s)

3 new drivers that I haven't seen before until now:
SoundGridMidi.sys
SynchronousAudioRouter.sys
SoundGridProtocol.sys

Motherboard: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/M5A99FX_PRO_R20/
You are using BIOS version 2301. There are BIOS updates available for your system. Wait for further instructions before considering updating. Always verify the information before attempting to update. Note: Updating your BIOS can be risky. Never try it when you might lose power (lightning storms, recent power outages, etc).

I can't help you with this. Wait for additional replies. Good luck.

Solution

I deleted the AsIO.sys file manually and those 3 drivers are indeed studio audio related, I have been using them for more than 13 years, so I doubt they are the culprit.

Let's see what happens now with that file gone :bounce:

Thanks for the help so far

Dang, I was getting excited because I was on a roll of no crash for three days until now ( I was even thinking today of marking the previous post as solution lol). This time I was playing a game and the pc turned off by itself, no crash screen or anything; maybe this is a sign of overheating.

Also, I checked my memdump folder and it was empty.

I checked the pc and there was no significant amount of dust. Its been 1 week and I haven't seen any crash again, so I feel now sure to say that the issue is fixed.

Thanks!
