Alright so hears the deal. Thinking of buys a desktop (currently I'm running off a laptop) and want to connect up to ethernet. I've never done this before but there are no ethernet ports in my house. Instead we have what I believe to be something called BTs. Im wondering if anyone can help me. I need to change from a BT into a RJ45 or Ethernet cable but I have no idea how. I know that it can be done because I've been able to connect through Ethernet through my router. I'm just wondering if there's a plain old adapter. I've been searching around and I can't find anything. I live in New Zealand so I'm somewhat limited but any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Likely you have telephone jacks. If your house is somewhat newer maybe you can convert them. First problem is going to be the wires. You need ethernet grade wire in the walls. If it uses that old red/green/black/yellow cable you have no chance. You also want 4 pairs of wires and many telephone only has 1 or 2 pairs. Now even if your wire is correct phones jacks are wired from jack to jack in many cases. Ethernet want single run connection. Your phone jacks would need to be run back to central panel.

In houses that are say newer than 15 years they tended to run cable you can use for ethernet back to central locations more. Stuff that is older tends to be daisy chained using crappy wire.

You may want to look into powerline...

You may want to look into powerline network devices if your current wiring does not appear to be a option.

I can run into my router and then to ethernet. Think I'll just run a cable from the other room or look into powerline as you said. Powerline light be the better choice. Thanks for the feed back.
