APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Less than two weeks or mid January BUDGET RANGE: ~500, preferably just under, but if good buys to really increase longevity, might consider

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: (Gaming, video download/conversion + media storage, office/student stuff, web..blah blah, if it can game and do media, it can do the other stuff

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: OS, kb, monitor, mouse, speakers--maybe case?

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: assume newegg, but any are fine for deals

PARTS PREFERENCES: AMD CPU for budget, have been suggested either Athlon IIx3, x4 or Phenom II x2 550 BE. Help here would be good, currently leaning toward the Athlon II x3.

OVERCLOCKING: Maybe SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Probably not

MONITOR RESOLUTION: using a mediocre LCD until I can afford an upgrade, then just use the current as a 2nd display. Max res now is x768 I think, looking to buy a x900 or x1080 by summer.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Quiet would be nice, as we would like to be able to use this as a HTPC when we get a new TV.

I have a case on hand, cant find it online so I dont have a model or brand, but it seems like it was marketed toward builders. Has a side window and side fan vent. Would need to buy fans, but otherwise I think it is usable, but I really have no idea what to look for. Also, should i get the 500gb Spinpoint F3 or wait for the 1TB to come back in stock on newegg? If the case I have may work, I will sink the money into a better PSU-sound good?

Here is what i built.

How about this. 465 after rebates, no case. Hopefully I can use mine, but I would like to see how cheap I can go on a case if I have to include one. Any suggestions?

That uses a 500 spinpoint f3, changed to a 9800gt and a 600W OCZ PSU for a $170 combo and good rebates, Patriot RAM- could be changed.

Let me know what you think.

Just another though, b/c of the 6 months no interest, I may upgrade just a little just to get over the 500 dollar mark. I might hold out for the bigger spinpoint, but if anything else, is there somewhere else I should sink the 15 bucks or so? It all depends on what total newegg uses for the 500 dollars. As it is right now, it is 497.43 before shipping and Mail in rebates, so I assume I need to spend another 2 bucks and change. This could also be a case pretty easily. More food for though, let me know what you think.
