Hi,

I'm looking to build a new PC for gaming purposes, I have a budget of £700-850. I might be able to use some parts from my current PC.

Current PC:
Mobo: Asus M5A78L/USB3 AMD Socket AM3+ 8 Channel HD Audio ATX Motherboard
Case: Cooler Master K-series K280 - Usb3.0 Atx Case
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz CL9 1.5V Non-ECC Unbuffered
Dvd Drive: Samsung SH-118AB 18x DVD ROM Drive - Black
GPU: Geforce GTX 650 Ti
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3.4GHz Socket AM3 6MB L3 Cache Cache 125W Retail Boxed Processor
HDD: Seagate 1TB Barracuda 3.5" SATA-III Hard Drive - 7200RPM 64MB Cache
PSU: Corsair 500W CX Builder 80 Plus Bronze PSU 3 Year Warranty.

I am looking to play most new games at high/ultra graphics and a steady fps. I mainly play League of Legends, but will be interested in playing battlefield 1 and future games when they are released.

My budget might be able to increase by £100 if need be, but I would rather keep the price within budget.

Thank you for your time. :)

Performance wise the GTX 1060 seems to have the edge over the RX 480 in most titles.

But importantly the increase in performance is offset by an almost equal increase in price £200 for 4Gb vs £238 for non-compact 1060.

You will also not be able to add a second GPU for SLI with a 1060 so if dual cards are in your future the RX 480 would be better.

It comes down, as usual to price & efficiency.

I'm considering getting a 1060 for my PC to be honest as my HD 7950 is getting on a bit now but I might just wait another year...we'll see!

Dial back the MB and get 16 gigs of ram if you are inlcuding teh word "future" in your requirements.

EDIT: Oh, adn wait for a non-reference RX 480 8GB. totally worth it.

For the same price of the XFX you can get a gold rated Super Flower PSU. Neither PSU is terrible but the Super Flower is a newer design and will probably suit the RX 480 better.

Is the 1Tb HDD in addition to the one you've got now as that old one will be fine in a new build.

Have a look on eBay and see how much you would expect the separate parts to go for and then have a look at how much a new case, HDD, DVD drive will cost you and subtract that from the price you can get for the whole system - whichever option works out best financially is what you should do.

Obviously the build is entirely up to you but I would make a few changes, even though it increases your budget:

1. Get the Samsung 950 evo as it is a great SSD for the price.
2. I would get a better PSU if your budget permits as it will last you longer.
3. I would not buy the RX 480 (same goes for GTX 1060) just now because it is not entirely clear where it will be placed in the GPU hierarchy for performance. It is much safer to wait until we see more benchmarks because you may end up with an inferior card for a greater cost.

I don't understand why you're saying the RX 480 hasn't been reviewed? There's a lot of comprehensive reviews out there (including on Tom's) that put it somewhere between the GTX 970 and 980 for most games.

For example
http://techreport.com/review/30328/amd-radeon-rx-480-graphics-card-reviewed
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/amd-radeon-rx-480-polaris-10,review-33587.html

I agree though that it's worth waiting a few weeks for supply/demand to settle down, 3rd party coolers to become more available and the GTX 1060 to be comprehensively tested

As a trained scientist I was taught that you need to run multiple tests before you can start trusting your data and to compare data then the test conditions have to be exact.

Therefore, at this point in time I stand by my opinion that we have not seen enough tests to know for certain how well the RX 480 or GTX 1060 perform in relation to the current cards.

I should also point out that the tests in techreport are for 1440p so are not relevant as the OP plays at 1080p. Unfortunately I cannot see the graphs/tables in the Toms Hardware review due to a reported bug on the site. However, let me reiterate, the benchmarks I have saw for the RX 480 at 1080p are far from conclusive whether or not it is a better card than the GTX 970 which is currently cheaper. For that reason I still recommend holding off on the purchase as I would like to see more results before I reach a conclusion.

For the record I am not a NVidea fanboi and I often recommend AMD over NVidea when the results show that AMD is the better card in that price range.

p.s. I didn't say that the RX 480 had not been reviewed, I said that some of the benchmarks I have seen show the GTX 970 out performing it, which indicates that I have seen test results.

How long before the GTX 1060 is reviewed? Also It would still be within my budget to buy a whole new PC, selling the current one would be a bonus, especially if I can get £250 for it :D

I agree. I'll hold off on buying anyway (need to save the money), If the RX480 doesn't live up to expectation and the GTX 970 is cheaper then I'll obviously go with the GTX 970 :)

Unless W8 is cheaper and you intend to upgrade, get W10. The rest is good.

Ye windows 10 free upgrade ends on the 29th july. So as long as I build the PC before then I can just upgrade to win10. Otherwise Win10 costs an extra £30.

I think they're going to be playing at 1080p across two screens so 1440p is more relevant...

It's worth remembering that the GTX 970 performance is probably the best it will be. It's drivers are not going to be refined much now it's EOL. It's likely that the performance you see for the RX 480 at present is the worst case scenario as it's based on basic reference designs and newly minted drivers.

I also don't really favour one brand over the other, I don't see the point as it's preferable to be objective when advising others which is why I keep advising to hang on a few weeks for a better overview of RX 480, GTX 1060, GTX 970 and maybe even R9 Fury and 980. Too much is in the air right now for GPU's.

The GTX 1060 is released on the 19th July and so reviews will appear then.
