Reason why S12II doesn't have OCP (over current protection) and OTP (over temperature protection) is because when S12II came out in 2010, there were no requirements to have OCP and OTP on a PSU. Those protections that were required back then: OVP (over voltage protection), UVP (under voltage protection), SCP (short circuit protection) and OPP (over power protection), Seasonic also added to it's PSUs.
Why does it matter to a consumer why they did it? All they should care about is what the PSU has now.
Also, Seasonic this “1st grade” OEM hasn’t updated that PSU to independent regulation or even a different protection IC because they don’t have the engineering resources, and since the power supplies sell well it must mean they’re already good! Yet the only reason they still sell is because they have the name “Seasonic”.
And they don’t/didn’t even have UVP on the 12V rail...
Relative to competition right now, the protections are very lacklustre.
While the 600W unit did fine in Tom's Hardware tests with some issues as well and some lower specs than S12II-520 (e.g voltage regulation is within 3% while S12II-520 voltage regulation is within 1%)
You can not compare data between different reviewers unless you understand their methodology. Using the formula used at JonnGURU’s voltage regulation, % = (max voltage reading - min voltage reading) / standard voltage * 100, we can find the Pure Power 10 tested by Aris has better voltage regulation. Focusing on the 12V rail, the Pure Power 10 has .78% ((12.147 - 12.053) / 12 * 100) according to the test at Tom’s, and 0.25% at a
JonnyGuru review. The Antec HCG 620 (basically same as the Seasonic) reviewed by Aris has 1.75% on the 12v rail, .84% for the 520 Antec by Aris, and 1.17% for the JonnyGURU review for the Seasonic 520.
And the Pure Power 10 has in spec voltages in all crossloads/load tests, unlike the S12ii.
Performance is much better all around on the be Quiet! Pure Power 10.
, what i'm more interested is the longevity of that unit. One way to know PSU's longevity is by looking the warranty period given to it.
No. Be Quiet and Seasonic are two very different companies, and have different ways for applying warranty to their products. For example economically the brands may be able to afford a longer warranty.
I guess Be Quiet! doesn't trust their PSU OEM: FSP.
What? That doesn’t make sense at all! If they don’t trust them why would they be using them?
Then again, Seasonic is 1st grade PSU OEM while FSP is 2nd grade OEM.
That just seems like an opinion, not a fact. Because what JonnyGURU believes a tier 1 manufacturer does is one that makes their PCBs (and often magnetic) in house.
http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15770
What this means is that quality control should be better in the “Tier 1” manufactures. FSP is a tier 1 manufacturer, Seasonic is not.
And don’t judge a power supplies quality/performance by the OEM it uses. Reviews are available - use them.
As far as S12II-520 fan goes, my PSU fan isn't noisy at all and i can hardly hear it, despite what is said in LTT forums (yes, i read that topic linked above).
One’s opinion in one situation means nothing. Because there are many factors such as the environment, sensitivity, distance, etc that affect your version of “quiet”. This is why data is better, since it keeps variables mostly the same, and what is found is the fan spins much slower on the Pure Power 10 during load, thus much quieter.
And if anything should happen within the next 2 years, i can RMA my PSU without issues.
Not really. Because the lack of protections could kill your parts.
And just because the PSU works doesn’t mean it isn’t crap for your components.
For specifically about S12II series, this topic in JonnyGuru forums is a good read where many experts, including Seasonic representative, shared their knowledge,

I’ve read that, multiple times. Check my comment on the first page
😉.
TLDR Seasonic REP explains their S12ii lineup is good because it sells, and they haven’t updated it for the past 8 years because they don’t have the engineering resources, or not a high priority to them.
While experts such as the Mask and Stefan explain why this power supply isn’t good in modern competition, because of the facts I’ve already brought up in this thread and that PSUs such as the be Quiet Pure Power 10 is much better at the same price.
