I'm trying to pull of a meaningful upgrade for my sons computer for Christmas. I've got $200 to work with - $300 if there is not way around it.

Right now he's got...

AMD A10 7800 series in a Gigabyte GA-F2A68HM-DS2H 8GB DDR3

GeForce GTX750Ti

I know I can really boost the GPU for ~$150 with a AMD RX570, but I'm not sure if it's going to help much with that very aged CPU.

Recommendations please...

Well, you have an FM2 socket board.... You can upgrade it to an Athlon X4 860k, 870k or 880k. But you may want to consider moving away from that setup as the CPU will bottleneck a newer GPU.

With $300, you can move to the Ryzen architecture, along with a new Motherboard and 8GB of RAM. Not sure how techy you are, but that would probably be a better choice.

But if you absolutely want to stick with that setup, got for an Athlon X4, but just know that you'll be limiting the GPU's full potential. Good luck!

I'm thinking an I3-8350k upgrade.. CPU, RAM, mohterboard is boing to run just over $300. Seems the closest to budget and still be a significant upgrade that should last him through high school. Get a better GPU in another year or so...
