I have a hp pavilion p6000 and am looking to upgrade my motherboard and a new processor, looking for anything moderately better in terms of performance (I have an old athlon II processor). I’m trying to not break over $200 or somewhere in that range?

You would be better off trying to buy a newer used or refurbished system. It is very hard to upgrade systems that were prebuilt computers. Any new motherboard and CPU would also need new RAM.
The issue is I don’t have the budget for something that will put out noticeably better without going above limits I believe, and paying extra for certain parts I have just seems a bit unnecessary

There are multiple issues with trying to upgrade something in a pre-built case. First the power supply is typically not the greatest and probably won't support a modern system, or uses non ATX standard cables. Second the motherboard typically has one screw that is proprietary and unless you have that exact screw driver you cannot remove the screw without damaging the case. Third sometimes motherboards are a different shape than you can buy from Amazon, Newegg, etc...

That is probably the best that you would be able to do for $200.

This will get you a new computer, new case, new everything - you just use your OLD hard disk - Add $20 for SSD which will help a lot.

That is about the best new computer you could get for less than $250.

Was the best I could do, and its so much better than the one he has

Would be nice to know what CPU and GPU he has in that system of his though. Many variations on the P6000 I see online

Assuming Athlon ii
https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Athlon-II-X4-640-vs-AMD-Athlon-200GE/m225vsm592714
It was said that the CPU is an Athlon II. For its time the Athlon II was a good CPU based on the K10 architecture instead of the Heavy Equipment lines. Question is which Athlon II is it. I had one of the X3's that I was able to unlock the 4th core.

Well my current processor is indeed a athlon ii, and I happened to get my only gtx 1050 ti for free.. Terrible bottlenecking and no full potential. That’s the main reason I was looking for something I could upgrade without breaking bank. I’m quite budgeted but somehow fortunate enough to own a 1050 ti
