Discussion Build appears to be dead in the water. Can't get GPU. Anyone able to predict the future? ;-)

Long story...kinda short...

I don't really "need" to build a pc right now, but I REALLY want to. (Been rocking a Dell laptop for the past 4 years that I bought strictly for school, and it can't do much. I miss gaming and working on a fast pc.)

Was 100% set on Intel with an air cooler, because that's what I'm used to and what my last build was many many years ago, but after research and hearing from people in these forums, changed to AMD with an aio.

Then got super excited about an all-white build! Even bought the case I wanted.

But when it came to the components... Whomp.

All white was tough in general, but it seems manageable, except for the GPU.

White GeForces are pretty much out of stock everywhere. What is out there is obscenely expensive. I don't have a budget, per se... I want what I want... but ridiculous is ridiculous. If I had to put a number on what I'm comfortable spending, it would be around $3,000, not including a monitor.)

So my question/discussion is, with a newer generation coming soon...maybe...do you think stores will restock the last gen stuff, or what's gone is gone at this point? Talking mostly about 4080 Super and 4090 cards. I assume prices would come down at that point if they do restock, but I feel like restocking seems unlikely for some reason. (4090s are now $3,000-4,000 on new egg and 4080 Supers are $2K!)

Am I basically waiting for the RTX 50 series now? Even if I do, what are the chances of getting one?

I'm in the Northeast US.

My latest plan is below: (for everything "not yet decided" it's only because I don't know when I'll be able to get a GPU, so there's no point picking specific parts now that may not be available in a couple months)

CPU: Ryzen 9 7950x3d
CPU cooler: Haven't picked a specific one yet, but definitely an aio 360 or 420 (my case fits either)
Motherboard: Gigabyte - X870E AORUS Pro Ice
Ram: Kingston FURY Beast 64GB (2 x 32GB) DDR5 6000 CL30
SSD/HDD: Haven't picked anything specific yet.
GPU: See above discussion. This is what's holding up my whole build.
PSU: Haven't picked a specific one yet. Likely 1000W
Chassis: Thermaltake Tower 600 (stand kit is backordered. I want to do a horizontal build)
OS: Microsoft - Windows 11 Home or Pro, haven't decided.
Monitor: Haven't decided, but probably 32" 3840x2160

What's gone is gone. 4090 assembly lines were like the first of the 40 series to shut down.

I assume prices would come down at that point if they do restock...
Retail prices go up, not down. They should be cheaper in 2nd hand markets from folks looking to offset some of the cost of trying to acquire a new gen gpu.

1)Pretty much.
2)Low. You'll be competing with scalpers, bots... many eager to get their hands on one, or multiple, and there's only going to be a finite amount of product available.

Not white and not Nvidia but it is higher end and it is in stock it appears.

I've got a 7900xtx PowerColor Hellhound in my rig right now for a week or so and I'm happy with it. The ray tracing performance is going to be closer to the Nvidia 30 series. Unfortunately I think you're in an in between time where they've likely stopped producing the last generation cards and the new ones aren't released yet.

I was able to nab my 7900 xtx from Microcenter nearby for 799.99, but now they have very little. I was looking a few minutes ago and the best cards they have in stock are a 4060ti 8gb and a 7700xt 12gb and maybe only 1 or 2 of either one. Newegg has a few options but not many. But as the guy above said, you're probably going to have scalpers jump on about anything that moves so you could be waiting a few months to even get one unless you are lucky enough to have a Microcenter and can grab one on release day. Other than that, you'll probably be lucky to get one unfortunately. As I said I'm happy with my 7900xtx for the money I paid. I've got another friend who had a 3090 for a while and he switched to the 7900xtx and has been reasonably happy with it.

I will say I have not tried 4k on my xtx. I think it would do it, but I'm running 1440p. Which I know for the 7900xtx is a vast amount of overkill but it is nice to crank things to ultra settings and have high fps. Even on the new Indiana Jones game I can set it to the Supreme Preset(I'm assuming that's without the more advanced ray tracing) but keep in mind they haven't programmed in FSR or frame generation for AMD on that game yet. But the xtx can handle pushing usually well over 100fps on that game at 1440p just by muscle. Anyway I've talked enough but might be worth a look. I think Newegg has a trade in program so you could always swap to a different card down the line.

Perhaps you could paint a GPU white, it would be easier if you could get one with removable shroud (don't paint metal parts, just the plastic cover). Get some really good blue masking tape, use a heat resistant primer and something like aerosol plasti dip, you can scrape off later.

Even if you cannot get a GPU right now, you could still build it. All Zen4 chips, except F sku's have igpu making the system at least usable, just not game ready. If this is a gaming only system, I would opt for a 7800x3d or 9800x3d, over a 7950x3d. Gaming on a 7950x3d requires core parking, which can be finicky.

The 7800x3d is more consistent in it's performance, because of the core parking. Hence why it was recommended by many reviewers, for a gaming only build, to go with the 7800x3d, when it came out. Now if this system is a dual purpose rig for some kind of workstation tasks, or content creation that needs more cores, the 7950x3d does make sense.

Now that I think about it, 9900x3d and 9950x3d announcement should be coming soon, at CES, so it might not be a terrible idea to hold off.
