Question Building a fast PC - - - 1660 TI vs 1080 TI in 2023 ?

Hello there!

As my current PC is on the edge of dying due to many issues which I won't even bother disclosing, I've decided to make a new PC with a rushed budget. This is what I have currently (excluding the GPU):


Ryzen 5 3600 (paired with AG300 cooler)
Silicon Power Zenith RGB 16GB 16GB (2x8) 3200MHz
B450 MSI-A PRO MAX
1st player 600W Black
------------------------------------------------------------------
GPU: 1080 TI / 1660 TI. I'll ask for AMD options.

Whichever GPU you upgrade to, do NOT use that 1st player PSU model. It's a cheap junk poor quality local Chinese PSU brand. Not meant for any gaming PC. This needs to be replaced at all costs !

Never skimp on the PSU.

You would be "downgrading" if you go for the 1660Ti instead of GTX 1080Ti. Don't do it. You need to get a higher tier GPU, at least from the 20 or 30-series SKUs, if you cannot afford the 40 series.

AMD also has several high end GPU options. It all depends on your BUDGET.

If the 1660TI is within your budget then by all means get it. Performance will be surely guaranteed.

PCs don't really die except in extremely traumatic circumstances, individual components do. I'd first replace the rather junky PSU you're using and see if it resolves your issues. We see countless people here who dig graves for their PCs when a couple repairs are all that's needed.

If you do build, this PSU should not be part of it.

The OP doesn't have a GPU to begin with. He wants to BUY a new graphics card, so the PSU can be taken out of equation if this is indeed the case.

The OP doesn't have a GPU to begin with. He wants to BUY a new graphics card, so the PSU can be taken out of equation if this is the case.

While that's likely, since you want to replace the PSU anyway, it's worth trying. And the OP hasn't told us what the problems are. And it's unclear by "what he has now" if he means the parts on hand -- in which case he'd absolutely have to have a GPU -- or the parts he has chosen for the rushed build.

I might presume that better gaming is the objective, and that the op already has some sort of a pc.

Games may be limited either by the cpu or the gpu.
Sims, mmo, and strategy games are more cpu limited, and fast action shooters may be more graphics limited.
To see which, run this simple test:
Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
This makes the graphics card loaf a bit.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

And... I would replace the psu with a quality unit of excess capacity.
Think 750w or more and look for at least a 7 year warranty.

A poor unit may be the cause of your unspecified problems.

As others have stated, replace that PSU first please. As for between the GTX 1660 TI or GTX 1080 TI, 1080 TI all the way. That said, I would also look at an AMD RX 5700 (XT), or RX 6600 (XT) those are much better than the GTX 1660 TI, and equivalent to the GTX 1080 TI, just newer, and in the case of the RX 6600's they can do ray tracing.

1. I do not have any of the parts. I am about to get them. I am excluding the GPU because the firm itself is not aware of their own god damn storage, because it's not a work day, and they'll check everything tomorrow.
2. I have contacted them and figured that the 1080 TI was sold couple days ago. So the only option is 1660 TI.
3. 6600 XT can be used with 60$ on top, and I really don't have that at the moment.
4. I have told them to replace the PSU with another one - went for some Deepcool 700W one, totally got rid of the 1st player one.

Which one exactly? Deepcool sells some pretty bad ones, especially the ones rated Bronze and worse, which tend to be dirt-cheap group-regulated ones.

Gotcha, its good that theyre replacing the power supply. Do they have a regular RX 6600 non XT or RX 5700 \ 5700 XT?

Nope. At the moment, I've to choose between MSI Ventus 1660 TI or Gigabyte 1660 Super

i swear by corsair psu's ive got 3 and they have worked perfectly ..

May i make a suggestion if the budget permits ( or save up ) a ARC 770 its cheap 16gb and will last for quite a few years still !!

Ive got one in another rig and its quite a decent card for its price point !!

Who is they? Some PC shop? Assuming that you're not building any of this yourself and for some reason don't get to choose your own parts either, I'd recommend picking another place that may be more competent. If they're the ones that got you into this 1stplayer PSU and apparently some mystery Deepcool, you should never bring a PC to these incompetents.

That's rough, how much are they charging for those? Could you source your own GPU? If there's literally no other choice, then the 1660 ti, they're just usually such a bad deal. I listed an article with tons of GPUs benchmarked and compared with time spy for reference. These results don't include ray tracing, though none of the cards mentioned other than the RX 6600s can ray trace anyway so I guess it's kind of a moot point.
