You must be the bravest guy I have seen, to put a P1 with WinXP and 128MB SDRAM!!!

When buying an AthlonXP, please make sure the bus is at 133MHZ, or you will get a lower speed!

Well, the NT OS's handle ports a little better, and NT4 was too hard to set up. So I went straight from 95b to XP Pro.

Loading up XP on a P-Pro200 with 112Mb is fine. Sure, of course it isn't a huge hose monster P4 or AMD but it works fine for just running 'stuff'. It will file server as fast as the NNIC you put in it (guys, ATA33 has been around a long time, and a 200mhz cpu, nor ATA33 are a bottleneck to file copying).

Sure, if you wat to use it for GUI related stuff it stinks, and I wouldn't have it running for that, but for just doing KAZAA/Grokster/whatever it is fine. I used it for a while as an internet server and certainly never saw anything like huge delays.

Big, powerful machines have their place (my main system is a dual XP1700@ 1547Mhz, 2GB DDR, 550GB HDD) but I do loads of video encoding, capture and editing on that. You don't need huge machines just to do file sharing/serving. The Internet used to serve and function just fine before PIII/P4 and Athlons were invented you know.

The pump on my water cooling setup is uber quiet. Thats why you get a submersible pump. Underwater = no noise. And no, it doesnt add much heat to the water. Saw many posts on [H] saying pumps add about 1-2 degrees to the water temp.

Good luck on the leech.

Benchmarks are like sex, everybody loves doing it, everybody thinks they are good at it.

Bootup is short! I don't think it takes any longer than 95 did. I just runs programs slowly. But running programs slow is fine for a file server on a 10/100 connection.

NT will work a lot better than XP on a Pentium class machine. For older machines like that, it's just better because it's less stressful on the system.

Knowledge is the key to understanding
