I heard that it's possible to build a vpn even without using any server you would pay for. Some say it's even more secure. How does someone learn to set up his own vpn ? Is it really easy for someone who knows networks to just set up a vpn and be invisible? how does that even work.

There are a couple different use-cases for a VPN. One is to hide your public IP address and your public traffic by using a VPN to a proxy service. This might be free but it is usually recommended to use a paid proxy service. Another use for a VPN is to extend a LAN through the WAN. Businesses use this method for remote office connectivity and for work-at-home employees.
