Build Advice Building gaming PC with Intel i5-11400F - Please comment on spec

Good evening,

Im hoping to self build gaming pc with the following spec as below, been waiting for prices to drop but obviously went other way. Please can I ask you to comment on selected hardware as its been long time since I build my last pc. If anything is choosen incorrectly please state why it shouldnt be like that and propose equivalent - this will help me tidy up my knowledge.

Spec on the list so far:

1. CPU: Intel i5-11400F

2. CPU Cooler: Not sure which one to choose - please suggest. Not sure if the coolers comes with pre-applied thermal paste already or not.

3. Motherboard: Z590 UD AC Gigabyte

4. Case: I have selected 3 cases so far but cannot decide which one to choose (Corsair 275R Airflow / Corsair 4000D Airflow / Be Quiet 500DX )

5. PSU: I have selected 2 units, cannot decide which one to take: (Corsair TX650M or RM650)

6. Memory: Crucial Ballistix Patriot Viper DDR4 2x 8GB 3600 (CL16 or CL17 - not sure which one to pick)

7. Graphic Card: Due to shortage and extremely high prices, Im not sure which one to pick. GTX 1660 Super is quite old and expensive now. Please advise what to do with graphic card.

8. Monitor: Can you please propose high Hz monitor for gaming please. Probably size from 24 inches up.

I will be using this PC for gaming, mainly Fortnite and Rocket League. If I missed anything else please let me know.

Thank you. I have noticed that on your list you a have a i5 11400 instead of 11400f. Is that correct or just a typo.Also there is a motherboard B560 instead of Z590 . Which one do you think is better? Is one hard drive enough or should I be getting 2 ssd drives.

11400 is actually the same CPU without the iGPU. The iGPU can sometimes come handy during GPU debugging. Suppose your card breaks down or plays up, you cannot diagnose the issue without another display adapter/card. iGPU can come handy at such times to boot the machine. But most importantly, the 11400 is actually cheaper than the 11400f right now. So, its a win win.

This is a locked CPU and you cannot overclock it even on a Z chipset. Previously Z chipsets were popular with locked CPUs due to its XMP capability, but from this gen. Intel has rolled out XMP for all the chipsets. The only thing you will miss a re a couple of extra connectors and PCIe lanes which are only handy if you have too many peripheral attachments like sound cards and network cards. If that is important for you then go for the Z series boards. Else this is one of the better budget boards...

As for SSD, 1TB is enough to start with. If you have budget for more, then go for it.

Thanks a lot @Hellfire13 . Just to verify before o go ahead 11400 is with Intel UHD 730 and then 11400F is without UHD ? Perhaps it makes sense to get 11400 which could be handy during troubleshooting as you have stated.

Z590 is currently £140 . So difference to B560M in price is approx £14. Is it worth spending this 14 quid on Z590 ?

graphic card is giving me a headache at the moment - I’m checking prices on eBay for 2nd even 1050Ti 2MB , they go for £200 are they any good. If you are talking about the Gigabyte board in your original post, then yes. Go for it.

I am not really a fan of ebay specially when it comes to electronics. There is also a certain amount of risk involved with used cards. If its from a mining rig, chances are its pretty roughed up. That 1660S linked above is reasonably priced atm. You can look into it.

As mentioned earlier all current gen, Intel chipsets supports XMP, so you can run any frequency upto 5333mhz. But you wont find much performance difference between 3600mhz and 3200mhz. Intel is not very sensitive to RAM speed in gaming.

Thats your choice. The cooler linked above comes with Blue Led and is good in cooling a 11400 at that price. Personally I dont prefer it as it adds no value except candy but produces heat, even if it is negligble.

I will also include a faster AMD option. You do not get IGP with it though. The 6600xt is considerable faster than a 1660s, or 1660ti. On average, it is about even with a 2070s.

If you want to hold out, on finding a good GPU deal, but still want to be able to do some light gaming. 5600g's IGP is a bit faster than a 1030, but far better than Intel's IGP.

I never had AMD before, all my life with Intel.
What’s the main difference between Intel & AMD and what’s the prognosis for the future for both companies.

If I go ahead with Z590 board, will this be good started just in case I need to upgrade CPU in few years ? Is Z590 only supports 11th gen CPU?

If you want to upgrade just the CPU, you definitely want AMD. You could update the 5600x to a 16 core 5950x, in the future. Z590, to my knowledge, is not going to support 12th gen, so a power hungry 8 core, 11900k would be your stopping point. I have had Intel and AMD, over the years. I made the switch, from a 6700k, and haven't regretted it one bit. AMD is ahead of Intel, for the moment. 12th gen may change this, but that is the nature of competition.

A very good build.
My thoughts:

1) 11400f is an excellent pick. But if the 11400(no F) is available reasonably, pick that.
You get integrated graphics. That lets you defer the graphics decision until proces stabilize. Even later, integrated graphics can let you diagnose graphics card issues.

2) 11400(F) comes with a stock cooler. It has pre applied paste.
It is adequate up to a point. Certainly enough to get you testing.
Most will opt for an aftermarket cooler.
My suggestion would be the noctua NH-U12s. It has one of the easiest and best mounting systems. It comes with a tube of excellent paste, good for half a dozen remounts if needed.

3) Nothing wrong with that motherboard. Since the 11400 can not be overclocked, you might find a B560 based motherboard cheaper.
Look for MATX size which usually cost less.

4) Any listed case will work well; pick the one that visually appeals to you.

5) RM650 is excellent quality with a 10 year warranty. For a bit more, I would pick the 750w version. You can handle the strongest gpu upgrade out there in the future.
A psu will only consume the power demanded of it, regardless of the max capability.

6) Ram is fine. at equal speeds, lower cas is better. No need to go overboard on ram speed. 3600 speed will run at lower speeds if your motherboard does not permit ram overclocking.
Intel is not very sensitive to ram speeds. Just get what you will ever need up front.
Upgrading later may have compability issues.

7) on graphics, the GTX1660 super would be a good choice.
I might hold out a bit to see if prices resolve.

8) Bust your budget if you need to for a great monitor.
It will be with you for a very long time.
Go see some in person if you can.
My thought would be a larger/wider high resolution unit.
Perhaps 32-34" 1440P
If you are a fast twitch gamer, look at a fast response time tn monitor.
More likely, you will like the better image quality of an ips monitor and the 178/178 viewing angle.

Anything else?? How about a ssd drive for windows.
I would pick only Samsung or intel here. Saving a tiny bit on a 2k pc is just not worth it.

It is probably not worth it to chase high performing pcie versions.
But, if budget permits go ahead. I did and can't really tell the difference.

1. I think I will go with 11400 (integrated UHD) , there is strong argument for this model as per your advise.

2. CPU Cooler - Deepcool GAMMAXX 400 or Noctua NH-U12S. Noctua is on Amazon for £43.99 - not quite why its half price when comparing to other suppliers. Is it worth getting NH-U12S ?

3. Motherboard - If I go with Z590 what are benefits over B560M really ? I wont be planning upgrading to another 11th gen CPU anytime soon. If I do decide to upgrade it will be 12th gen in few years. Someone did mentioned that this motherboard wont support 12th gen ? I know the price difference is only £14... What should I choose.

4. Is one SSD drive enough for this PC ? I will go for 1TB. When comes to manufacturer, the one from the list should do unless I invest little more and choose Samsung if their drives are better ?

5. Power supply - will 550W be big enough ? Someone did mentioned above to select 750W for future GPU upgrade. Is that worth ?

The only thing you will miss a re a couple of extra connectors and PCIe lanes which are only handy if you have too many peripheral attachments like sound cards and network cards. If that is important for you then go for the Z series boards. Or if the Z590 is a good deal like you mentioned above, then definitely go for it.

4. 1TB is plenty to start with in a gaming machine. If you have the budget for Samsung then go for it. But their good drives are expensive.

5. If you plan to upgrade to a bigger card later on then go for a 750w.

If its in warranty then its reasonable. Else you dont know how long it will hold up until you get it and run tests on it. If the card is under warranty and the seller allows you to run stress tests or runs them for you and sends you results with visible date for validation then you can go for it...

I had a quick look at the motherboard again and knowing that i5 11400 cpu is locked than perhaps I should save my money on motherboard and go with MSI B560M Bazooka. These are £99 on Amazon at the moment. Would that be right decision.

When comes to GPU I will be keep looking for some good deals out there. 1070 could also be good selection if I can find it for right price.

Card comes with 2 years warranty from shop been told.

Perhaps I need to get order this pc parts quickly, build it and then get GPU. They give 48hrs to return it if there is something wrong with it. After this 48hrs I would get voucher to spend with them on something else.

• GTX 1650 Super 4GB £250
• MSI RTX 2070 8GB GDDR6 £515

Check out the video linked above. Dont go for those cheap b560 boards as they tend to suffer from inadequate VRM and are only good with power limits enforced which limits performance to an extent. A good quality board will not only keep your processor in good health but also give you better performance.

• MSI RTX 2070 8GB GDDR6 £515

Apparantely 2 years warranty for hardware failure comes with every card as standard. If I had to choose one, would GTX 1070 do the work ?

If you want to wait out of a graphics card but still want to play some games on low setting in the mean time get his 2nd build. Although I respect the effort to try and get a Nvidia GPU the 6600xt is going to be your best performer, its a new card, and not some random 5 year old card that got mined on for 4 years.

Well, damn. At some point it was... right? Regardless, I would go for option 2 then from logainofhades post or delay the build until you can get a GPU. I was able to grab a 3060 ti for 600 dollars at a microcenter the other day so its possible, just got to get lucky... I thought the GPU situation in the UK & EU was better than in the states...

Location is UK

This build allows you to run that cpu with the power limits turned off in the bios. It's a round a bout way of o/c these locked cpu's as it keeps them in turbo boost mode longer. btw the difference between 3600mhz and 3200mhz memory for Intel 10/11 gen in regards to performance is zero.
