OK, here is my story. Get a comfortable chair.............

I bought all of this stuff (see list below) back in 2015 with the plans to build a server/HTPC/business/storage machine. Thus all the hard drives.

Then I moved twice and everything was in boxes still in the sealed packages. Life changed so I don't need the HTPC anymore. Sold the business so that need is gone. All of the stuff I was "saving" I have been able to live without. Cloud storage has taken the pressure of having lots of on-site storage.

So, I had a plan. The plan got delayed. The plan has now changed as life changed and technology advanced.

In summary: I want something faster than I have now. I have a habit of leaving many browser tabs open, which, causes resource issues thus having to either force closing stuff or doing a restart (takes 16 minutes). At this moment I have 140 processes running per Task Manager so I will need help to tame them.

As with most people now, I do not want to wait for my spreadsheet to open or running out of memory/resource or long boot times.

Below is the stuff I already have. Yes, I know none of it is current but it is paid for and still "new.in.the.wrapper". Are there any changes I should make given today's thoughts and experiences? Pretty sure I don't need all those hard drives. I am open to your thoughts and recommendations and any questions.

Thank you.

You have a lot of top notch parts there. For your uses that 4690K should be plenty of CPU power for everything that you need to use it for. If you're interested in getting something new there's always the i5-8400 and the Ryzen R5-2600, both are solid CPUs. You can definitely use that case if you're looking to save some money, but I would get at least a 450W - 500W PSU.

Thanks for the replies.
I'll just keep the CPU I have.
I will pass on the 60GB as suggested. Which SSD should I use for the OS?
Since my current PC has only a 650GB hard drive I will just install the 2TB drive for my older stuff and the other SSD as my main stuff drive.
Since I'm not installing all the spinning disks I'm guessing the current power supply will be fine? Or is there another issue?

Thank you for the reply.
Since you have the same motherboard and I saw that you mentioned that you were getting more memory, what did you end up doing?
I'm old school and have always considered the there is never too much memory. Even though my original plan was only 8GB I am considering going to 16GB or 32GB. Your thoughts?
I just checked the Crucial website (my current memory) for the motherboard I have and the exact model is not included in the motherboard pull-down as related to my memory. So I might as well get all new memory?

For your 60GB drive you could always buy an external enclosure and use it as an external drive., I do that with my old HDs and SSDs all the time. As for the OS drive I would use at least a 120GB, but the 250GB would be the best by far.

And as far as drives go, they use the least amount of power of any component - most are around 5 - 10 watts max. What you would need to make sure is that your motherboard has enough SATA ports to be able to accommodate all the drives you plan to use.

That's a myth - especially for your uses. I wouldn't get anything more than 16GB. You don't need more than that unless you're running a RAM disk or working with exceptionally large video files. But for every day use, 8GB or 16GB is plenty.

You would only need to get new RAM if you're upgrading from 8GB to 16GB or 32GB, because it's always best to have a matched set. Crucial is fine, but I generally prefer G.Skill. But that's mainly a preference thing.

I have 2 sets of this memory running at 2400 speed with standard timings, voltage at 1.6 volts.

Most people do not need more than 16gb but I use a lot of work programs and have used in the 24gb area of the 32gb.

If you use crucials memory scanner and buy from them they guarantee that it will work so if you buy anouther 2x4gb set get it that way.

More memory than you need does not make your PC faster.

Thank you for the reply.
All 4 of the hard drives are unopened so I will probably sell them. Then I will use my existing 650GB drive and move the important stuff onto the 500GB SSD. Then I will have room on the existing drive.
Yes, I will get more memory by moving up to 16GB total.

Where is a good place to sell my hard drives?

Chatted with Crucial. Since the memory I currently have is no longer made, they will not guarantee compatibility with buying a new version of the 8GB kit and mixing the 2 sets. Crucial said, "it should work but there could be issues".

So, I decided to just get this instead and be done with it.

Since I have no plans to enhance anything by tweaking the speed or voltage I should be ok. Right?
