So like the title says I am building a new desktop setup with a B550 Gaming Plus mobo, cpu is Ryzen 7 2700X. Anyway, the simple questions I have is what header on the motherboard should I plug my liquid AIO into? My cpu temps are all over the place, they will jump from 50c back down to 29c.... and then back to 50, all while at idle. Any idea why this is?
Where to plug depends on the connector on your AIO you are talking about. There can be many including one or two fan connectors, one pump connector and an RGB connector. Each should plug into a different header.
I'd plug the pump into a fan header on the motherboard labeled for the CPU. That's because most motherboards monitor the CPU fan RPM and sound alarms if it ever drops too low. I'd adjust it for constant output of 100% or +12V, so full speed, all the time.
You can also use a SATA adapter and plug the pump into a SATA power connector. If you do you lose ability to monitor pump RPM and therefore have to disable any motherboard alarms. It will run at full speed all the time.
The radiator fans can be plugged into any of the chassis fan headers. I use a "Y" splitter (I've a 240mm AIO) to bring the two fans to one plug so I use only one chassis fan header for both. The chassis fan header should be able to handle 4 or 5 modern fans.
I wouldn't plug an RGB connector in anywhere since I don't like it. Unless, that is, I had to disable any glaring default light profiles. If you have and want RGB control you have to make sure the AIO connectors are compatible with any motherboard headers. If not you'll need a separate RGB controller.
As far as temperature you're seeing: Ryzen is extremely dynamic even at idle. It boosts individual cores to a high clock and back to idle incessantly, every boost raising temp a little before it idles back and cools off. Further, it has several dozen temp sensors scattered across the CPU die. You see the temp spike from each boost with many utilities that don't average the CPU core sensor temperatures; get HWInfo and look for CPU Die Average temps.
Also, be sure to install the AMD chipset drivers downloaded ONLY from the AMD support web site. They update the power plans to be more appropriate for Ryzen energy management.
