Building PC for my Friend

Solution
I would recommend an ssd. i just finished my desktop and took the ssd out of my laptop because the desktop was being slow. i suggest a samsung 840 evo or crucial mx100.
Opt for the newer i5 4690. If you don't intend to overclock or if your friend doesn't.. don't bother with the k version..just get the non-k. This would probably require upgrading the board to the latest z97 chipset (although z87 does support devils canyon in most cases)

Not sure why you're spending so much on a wireless adapter..or wireless at all on a desktop..but you could take the money from that and the processor and invest in an SSD which would give immediate gains.

Well, he can't use Ethernet as the router is too far away, and an SSD he might not take advantage of... But I have changed to the newer i5-4960 Rather than the older k version. The board I upgraded to a MSI Z97 Guard-Pro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard. Know if that's any good? Thanks for your reply! Appreciate it...

I don't think he would take advantage of an SSD. But please, why would you recommend an SSD, does it increase FPS performance? I don't think so... oh and what would be the difference in boot times with a HDD vs SSD? Sorry If I am asking to many questions, I just want to get a good PC for my friend.

it does not increase fps but does decrease load times for everything. it took a minute or so off my civ 5 load times. For boot times it went from 35ish seconds to around 5. an ssd was the best $130 i ever spent on my computer. Also it decreased the original install time for windows.

Everyone will ''take advantage'' of an SSD.. its faster load times..faster boot times..faster read/write. The price isn't really an issue anymore as their fairly cheap. You can get a cruical MX100 @ 256GB for $110 shipped or a samsung 840 evo for around $130. Either are great options although the evo 840 pulls ahead.

I'm not familiar with that specific model board but MSI makes great boards.. I think the top 3 are usually Asus , MSI, gigabyte..and then ASRock at least in my mind.

Other than that I think your build is solid..and if your friend has to use wireless then that's certainly a good adapter for it.
