Hi all, as mentioned in the title, I am planning to build a PC from scratch and will need lots of help and advices on areas which I do not have knowledge of. Here goes some of the parts I have decided.

CPU - Intel I7 2600k
Motherboard - Asus P8P67 Pro
GPU - Asus Engtx 460 1GB TOP
PSU - Coolermaster 550w
HDD - WD 500GB SATA III

Besides the parts above which I prefer not to change, I need help/advices on casing, dvd/cd rw drive and which SATA III SSD and cosair ddr3 1600mhz 2x2 GB RAM stick to choose.

*Note: I know of the news where Intel's SATA II port is degrading thus, I'm sticking to all the SATA III interface parts.

Regards~

hi all, thanks for all the replies. I was thinking what RAM and some other misc parts to choose. I am concern about the PSU not providing enough or too much voltage. Also, which RAM is most compatible with Asus P8P67 + I7 2600k board.

I am curious on how to calculate just how many watts should the PSU be, and how much other parts should use in order to prevent shortage/surge of power

Hi weilunool :hello: ...First off get rid of that power supply unit & get something in the range of 850 watts plus ;) ( for future proofing & for sli times )...Your HDD maybe O.K.,but I would put some thinking time into it & try something else & also a sata 3 SSD etc...Coolermaster case :-RC-692...Corsair have some ram sticks at 1600 MHz that are 7-8-7-20,they have them in the 2 x 2 gb as well as 1 x 4 gb range...You can go for a good, but cheap DVD burner for now at 24 times & wait for your cash flow to increase & then buy a real good blu-ray burner/reader...Try to keep general surfing separate from online gaming...The places you visit could be detremental to your gaming computer...So if you can, just get a real cheap surfing the net pc & you'll be right ;) ...What I mean is to have two pc's if necessary, one for gaming online & the other for general surfing anywhere you wish :) ...Sorry I can not give you some links as I have to go to work soon ;) ...

Thanks for the input. I was wondering if the corsair 1600mhz timing 7-8-7-20 can work in p8p67 motherboard. check this link --> http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=HMMvTCuBcZLfu2YL

Sorry I don't get what concerns you have with HDD and SSD. I am planning to get both SATA 3 SSD and HDD.

Lastly, can I have some help on the PSU? Which brand should I choose that is both reliable and cheap =P

GigaByte GTX 560 Ti website gives you the minimum power requirements for the whole system. 500W and 2x 6 pin PCI-e power connectors.

It won't be anytime soon that I will use SLI/crossfire.

I have questions on the RAM compatibility with P67 board. Does it mean that if a RAM model is not inside the list of qualified RAM documentation then it will not work?

finally i wish to learn more about voltage and power management/planning in pc. such as what watts PSU I should get, calculate roughly how much the total power the other parts will need etc.

ah before i forget, gaming wise, why is it ok to get 2500k instead of 2600k?

*I wish to learn OC as times goes by*

heya ~

I doubt I will be able to get my hand on a asrock mobo locally, and it'll be troublesome to deal with if the mobo is faulty.

my region = singapore

I also had questions about this in another thread. The only differences between the i7-2600K and the i5-2500K were that the i7-2600K--1. Has a very slightly higher speed (barely much of a difference, especially if you plan to OC the i5-2500K anyway), 2. Has 8 MB of L3 cache opposed to 6 MB (was told this doesn't make much of a difference, certainly not enough to justify $100 more), and 3. Has Hyper-Threading (was told no current games even put this to any use...except flight simulators).

Thanks for the link to that power supply calculator, it has been very helpful! Looks like getting a PSU of 850 watts is very much needed if I plan to replace some of the parts to better ones in the future.
