Hello all !!!
I want to build a system for 3D rendering (Maya 3d)
I have at the moment a mac pro 2 x quad xeon nehalem 2.26.
Nvidia quadro K 5000
32 Gb / 1066 Mhz
I want to make a better and faster system in order to speed up my render time.
I have about 3000 euro to buy at the start a motherboard Z9PE-D8 WS with 16 Gb 1866 ECC and some intel e5.
I would love to know what will be more efficient. To buy at the beginning only one CPU with 10 cores and later on (nobody know when) to buy the second CPU but that's the intention.
For 3D rendering would be more important number of cores or the Clock of the CPU ????
What would be the best combination that will worth the money and that will be better that my present mac system ??

well your gpu is about as good as you are going to get without completely blowing your budget. my suggestion would be to upgrade to say a 49xx processor (4960x is about the best you can buy) get a compatible motherboard, and then get yourself some much faster ram. the i7-extreme edition will GREATLY increase rendering times, and combined with faster ram will leave your old mac in the dust

for rendering, number of cores, speed of cores, and real performance per core as well as combined performance are important. just because a processor has 12 cores, does not mean it will perform better than say a 6 core processor. you need to do some real research to find out which cpu is best, and which one best suits your needs.

Now, i see that you are used to having 2 cpu's, and so i do agree that 2 cpu will do a much faster job, but in terms of the price you pay, you very likely will end up hitting a ceiling in terms of how fast you can actually get, "diminishing returns" is the principle of this
