Right... if the CD was not closed/finalized that can cause reading issues... also if you burned the CD in several burning sessions. This doesn't mean burning this way would leave them unreadable but some readers may not read them flawlessly depending on the laser diode condition. For best readability, burn your CDs in Disc-at-Once mode to close/finalize them and get the best results.
Run the CD on CD checking software. if it contains burning errors the app should detect them.

It may also depend on the burned files format... how many songs did your burn into the CD? +/-24 are probably in .cda format and should play, hundreds likely in .mp3 format, should play only if the player has mp3 capability

As it displays the track #, I suppose the counter doesn't keep count of the seconds to minutes the track lasts?,.. to That wold mean it's not getting past the track #... and it would be the laser is weak to read more than the track #.
I have had this issue in the past and it's probably the format your have done your burn.

manually override the burning and do it at a slower speed. try 2x or 4x. also try a different blank CD brand. the older players were finicky back then, and situations did not improve.
