Buy 980ti or wait for Pascal?

Hi, I'm planning on upgrading my current build.
What I would like to know is if I should just buy 2x 980ti's (or whatever they're called) or wait for Nvidia's next architecture to launch.
If I bought the 980ti's would they be able to use DX12 when it launches?

Thank you.

Solution

Get the 980Ti now and yes it supports DX12. The NVIDIA's PASCAL cards are expected only at end of 2016 or early 2017.

Your i5 processor has plenty of fire power left in it and 8GB of RAM is still the sweet spot, will serve you well at least till PASCAL cards come out..

Games that make use of Hyper Threading is still in its nascent stage. No need to panic whatsoever.

So in the end, get only the GPU single GTX 980 Ti or...
I'd get the Skylake and two of those 980ti's. I believe they are simply Titan X's with only 6GB memory. I'd get a build like below. Just replace the CPU with an I7 Skylake and the motherboard with a Skylake one and replace the 980's with 980ti's.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I currently have an i5-4670k, would that bottleneck the two cards? If so, I might as well just try to sell my current PC and then just buy what you wrote.

Games are just starting to use the hyperthreading. Also games are just starting to need more than 8GB of memory depending on what all else you are doing. Skylake should be coming out in August if you can wait that long. It would be worthwhile I would think.

Not at all, this CPU is just fine. When Skylake comes along and you want to upgrade, just change the CPU/Mobo combo.

You're welcome! :) And also before you get the GTX 980 Ti, the new 300 series cards from AMD with HBM memory will be in the market. So you'll will be in a better position to compare the GTX 980 Ti with 300 series high end card and go for the right one.

Cheers!

If nvidia do things similar with maxwell we probably see low end pascal in the form of GP107 early next year. Of course it probably depends on how soon TSMC can be ready with their 16nm FinFet as well. But i think nvidia can't really afford to be late with Pascal either for one critical reason: HPC. Right now for HPC nvidia still rely heavily on kepler since they ditch DP with maxwell. Hawaii already superior than GK110 in term of DP although it seems in term of compute efficiency (not to be confused with power efficiency) kepler seems doing better. And with the new card launch from AMD nvidia have to fight that with the aging kepler architecture. On other side there were also intel which seems going more and more momentum with their xeon phi. Nvidia already won 2 supercomputer contract but the recently announce supercomputer contract win by intel (don't really remember the name, i think it was Aurora) should be able to rival the performance of supercomputer build with nvidia (and IBM) system.

Not sure why you needed to include the fact that you came into a lot of money. We really don't care. Hope you feel better about yourself. But those are things you should keep to yourself.

Why the fuck does such a small detail annoy you?

Why are you being rude? It's basic etiquette to not tell people something they don't need to know.
Anyways, get a single 980Ti. I have recently seen FireStrike scores of dual 980Ti's with a i7 4790k and I only saw about 20% improvement in benchmarks. If you want, you can always upgrade later.
