I'm interested in hearing about any experiences/recommendations from the THGC crew. I'm down-sizing from a fairly old HP 21" tube. What I'm looking for is a 19" Flat Screen CRT in a black cabinet (1600x1200 @ 75hz or higher is preferable also). I want to focus on a quality purchase in the $300-500 range. I'm leaning in the direction of an NEC monitor, but I thought I'd come here first to see what people have to say.

got a sony cpd g410r myself, amazing picture quality! text is good also (not excellent though)
if ya want a top of the line 19" unit i suggest going w/sony

i bought a philips 109P4 flat screen CRT i run it at 1600x1200 at 75Hz (but it can go up to 85Hz at that resolution, i just turned it down to extend its life and keep correct colours for longer)

anyway i had troubles with convergence of the monitor and sent it back 2 times/ replacments

however after they finally agreed to adjust it rather than just send me a new one its PERFECT. i am very very happy with it now. so now i have it ICC adjusted for printing (what you see on screen is the exact colour of what is printed) and the convergence is very tight as well so things are rather sharp on screen.

however i did have annoyances with customer service but on the whole they were good asnd got the problems fixed for me.
i'd go as far as recomending them 😉

I know this isn't quite in your price range, actually a little lower( about $260), but the nec fe991sb-bk (that's the black cabinet one) is a great monitor. I've had mine for about 3 months now with no problems. The colors are good and so is text. Great for games and movies! and yes, it can do 16 by 12 at 85hz

That's been the monitor I was looking at actually, jibber. A good friend of mine has one so I was able to see it for myself. I'm checking out all these suggestions though, thanks for the replies folks.

I had a P95f and it had lots of distortion I could not resolve. I was using a FireGL graphics card. I RMA it and they sent a PF790 and it is a nice monitor, but without the USB hub.

Visually, I prefer the Samsung tubes. They're .20mm dot pitch and have really good clearity.

"and yes, it can do 16 by 12 at 85hz"

From Newegg info on NECFE991SB-BK 19":
Max / Optimal resolution: 1792 x 1344 @ 68 Hz / 1280x1024 @ 85Hz

are you sure 85Hz is supported at 1600x1200? Seems a little high but I dunno 😛
