Hi, I'm thinking of buying a backup router for my business in case the one we have the now goes down. But i'm not sure what the best option is. Has anyone done anything like this before?

I'm not sure how one router would work if the first one goes down, would i just need to have 2 separate ISP's?

Thanks in advance

Instead of getting a second router and a second ISP, I'd recommend just getting a dual WAN port router. You can replace your current router now and as you add a second ISP, plug them into the same router for fail-over.

Not that I agree with each of these devices - but this will give you an idea as to what you are looking for.
Routers usually don't die so quick, so you shouldn't worry about having a backup router. But if that's the case, I would recommend TP-Link or Netgear. Make sure that when you're buying a router, it is unlocked to your ISP.

You don't need 2 seperate ISP's, unless your current ISP doesn't provide you service 24/7.

We are just going to buy one to be safe. But what i don't understand how if i have 2 routers on the same ISP and one goes down why the other wont go down?

There's nothing wrong with my router and i mean if my ISP stops providing internet for any reason.

If your ISP stops providing internet then having a backup router wont help. You would need something with a cellular connection to a 4g network.

So if i had fail-over set up and was connected to a secondary ISP and my primary went down how would the secondary not work? if they are both completely different what stops my secondary from working?
