Hello All!
I am looking to purchase a new GTX 970, Luckily I've found a ASUS GTX 970 STRIX for sale for a good price! However, my question is the fact that will my PC be able to handle it?
I am currently running:
Gigabyte H97-D3H MB
Intel Core i5 4460 3.2GHz
8 GB RAM DDR3
ThermalTake TR2 500w PSU
I am also currently running a ASUS GTX 660 Ti 2 GB
I know for a fact that it will fit in my HAF 912 case, but I'm curious that if I do install this 970, will everything be in working order? Will I need a better PSU? Will my PC even handle? Can I even handle?
Thanks for all your support guys!

Well that's just the worry. Spend $50 now on a decent replacement psu, or wait till it fails in typical TR2 fashion an takes out not only the $100 motherboard but the $300 gpu. Personally I'd rather spend the $50 now than $500 later on 'if something ever fails, replace it (duh!).'

You might wanna just check on the specs for the card. It'll tell you exactly how much power is needed to run that card:

Have a look at that link there. My suggestion is to get one thats going to futureproof your system i.e. if you decide again to upgrade again you will have some space to do that. Minimum requirments for the GTX 970 is 500w but look for something that has a bit more punch. Also make sure the PSU is Modular . Your CPU should be good. 8gb of RAM is plenty if all your doing is gaming.

That's a link to my exact PSU, doesn't look to be modular. You think this PSU will be ok?

Thats the minimum requirment for the GTX 970. If your upgrading in the future i would say to get something a bit better. Have a look at this link.

I am upgrading soon from a r9 270X WHICH IS A 2 GB CARD. for example the new AMD 390x which is the new 290x flagship card requires a minimum 750w PSU. If you get somthing now that is that spec you will be futureproofing if you ever decide to upgrade in the future.

It all depends on what you wanna do with regards upgrading in the future.
My advice, prepare for the future so you dont have to splash out again.

500w should be fine for now but in all honesty, save your money and get something a little better.

Since I have the minimum requirements for GTX 970, Im going to purchase it now and have all the fun I can have and worry about upgrading again later.
Thanks for all your help!

Just be careful of that TR2, they are not very good quality, and once they start to age, or get pushed to hard, they can be a rather interesting fire works display. It should be ok for now, the 970 has a similar draw to the 660ti, but I would start saving for a new psu soon. Black friday/cyber Monday is right around the corner, so look for some good sales then on a quality 520/550w psu (there aren't any quality 500's, decent yes, quality no) look for a tier 2 unit.

No probs man. Happy Gaming :)

If the PSU goes, it's likely to take CPU, GPU and mobo with it. With higher end components it's best to take preventitive action and get a good solid PSU

Sorry I took for such a late reply, I managed to pick up a Cooler Master G650W PSU for a fairly good price. I just finished installing it and so far I'm pretty happy. Which means I'm going to pick up a GTX 970 soon.
Thanks for your support!
Have a great one!
