buying computer from an eBay seller-good idea?

Hello. Over the course of the past two weeks or so I've gone from looking into upgrading to deciding to purchase a new computer (because what I have now is only AGP 2x, has a rather slow processor and altogether is too outdated).

I've got a general idea of what I'd like and of my budget (between $600 and $750,counting shipping,necessary software,etc) and was wondering how safe it is to purchase computers through eBay. Specifically, I was looking at these computers:

-I found this one after browsing these forums and reading Beowulf021's “Sweet!!!” thread concerning the provider eCollegePC.com. I was wondering if this would be a good ,safe buy for most modern games (I'm quite used to playing games on really low specs-I'm not so concerned if it could run Half-Life 2 or FEAR at max settings so much as run such a game at decent graphical level but highly playable level).

looked like a good deal (providing the bid doesn't go well past my earlier budget) but am a bit concerned merely because it seems too cheap -I know this will likely go up but does anyone know anything about this seller? Or for that matter how reliable most eBay computer sellers are? I know that I could likely save some money in any case by building my own and expect this recommendation but I really do not feel up to that task-at present my experiences with hardware have been limited to replacing my old DVD drive.

Buying a box off eBay can be good or bad. I have purchased 3 or 4 computers over the past three years with varying results.

Individuals who sell a computer should be avoided. They often don't know what they have, and more importantly, won't pack the item properly. Just purchased a used IBM 1.6GHz P4 from an indivisual, very clean computer. Idiot sent it wrapped in a single layer of small bubble wrap in a box not much bigger than the unit itself. Add to that shipping via UPS, and needless to say, it did not arrive unscathed. No reply from seller on damage, but they are getting ready to lose their 100% feedback rating!

On the other hand, used technology companies can be a really good deal. More expensive than the individual seller, but you are paying for the knowledge of what they are selling you, and decent packing when the item is shipped.

I have purchased from both Montana4Me and 1stSource on eBay. They are both very good companies who describe their items correctly.

If you are considering using Ebay to purchase pc parts. It is all about the sellers feedback. Read as many as you can. You will see patterns develop about the seller as you read about other peoples experience. I personally will not buy from anyone who has less than 99% I will not buy from those who gouge the buyer with overcharges on insurance and shipping.
I have been very lucky using ebay and have dealt with some really cool people. Once I have a couple of good experiences with a good seller I place him/her in my favorites. Then its a good deal you can count on each time. Hope this helps, Good luck.

Maddog' has pretty much summed it up.
Just to add, try and find someone who has purchased the same item from that seller that your interested in, among the feedback, and contact the previous buyer direct if possible to get a detailed description of the item and the service he/she got.
If you have any doubt, dont buy it.
