My hobby is flightsim design...I commonly use gmax and photoshop, and internet, excel, a custom tool or so, and then...I'll boot flightsim to see the results of my creation.

On my older single core machine, photoshop would sometimes pause for ages before showing me my file, sometimes, flightsim wouldn't boot at all until I closed some apps.....

Now that I got a dual core AMD64 x2 3800+, I haven't had a problem keeping it all open at the same time.

I think its great for this purpose, its not important for me if it helps games play better.

i gotta say i think dual cores are great the only problem i have running a game and virus scan at the same time is my damn HDD, the dual core keeps things going ok but HDD access is much slower but then again its just cause my other drive failed on me....otherwise i complety agree dual core is worth it.

Why do people need Dual Core anyways? What's the point of running an AV and a game at the same time, can't you freakin schedual the AV to scan at a time where you know you won't be at home, or doing something else?. And it's not like you can't run PS and say, IE and MSN and WMP at the same time UNLESS you're using a dual core CPU. I think Dual cores are targeted to people who actually work with huge databases, for example, not for punks running Antivirus and playing Starcraft at the same time.

It was an amd athelon xp 2400M overclocked slightly. vid is an old 9800pro, in both boxes. 1gb ram in both boxes.

i got a P4c with Hyperthreading and its "just enough" to render a video without noticing a huge performance penalty, and it makes it more posible to play games while doing it, so ill aggree - dual core/ dual processor is not a waste, XP runs very fluient on it, i even have a dual celeron 466 system (ABit BP6 anyone?) still and it runs as fast as my other P3 1000 system in XP!!

Since the average person runs antivirus and other general background apps multiple cores will handle em while your doing your important work.

What about encoding video, downloading file, and watching movies at the same time? The only thing I read about on this thread is gaming while running virus scan. Now that is a waste if you ask me! Schedule norton to run at 2AM! Does anyone here have any practical suggestions on what normal consumers can do with dual core? Does anyone have any real life experiences with it?

where just using it as an example, but to answer your question heres a list of things i norm have going while playing a game:

Counter Strike Source
Iriver+ loaded with 800 songs
AVG(anti virus)
downloading a file from the internet(i got 8meg connection so it doesnt slow down source )

thats while gaming, if im working its mostly less intensive tasks like

MS word
MS powerpoint
Iriver 800 songs(yes i listen to music lots)
AVG
Photoshop CS 2
firefox

thats about it i do some 3d editing in spare time mainly for games like ut2004 and some video editing mainly converting dvds into vcds.

I am not sure if gaming and encoding at the same time is possible. Well at least decent games. But, just to humor you, I will give you 2 examples: Europa Universalis 2 and Rome:total war. Both games are notorious for the saved games never loading up again. So that means....... you woul dhave to let the game run forever and ever until you get sick of it or beat it. In the meantime, you may want to legally encode some DVDs for your roadwarrior Divx collection..... Now that is a novel idea! As with most things, its not about whether you should, but whether or not you could. No one needs to encode 24 hours a day, but if you could....... would you? I say BF2 @ 100fps is dumb when it looks just the same @ 60 fps. But people still go out and spend 2 large on a gaming rig to do it. To them, its not about whether or not they should, its the fact that they can. I cannot however. I dont think $300 to pave your own way to the future is extreme.
