I'm looking for some help in purchasing a new laptop.

It's main use will be day to day work, creating/editing documents, films on the go and the occasional bit of Photoshop/Web Editing.

Using PCS I've come up with this;

Chassis & Display
UltraNote Series: 15.6" Matte Full HD 60Hz 45% NTSC LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™ i3 Dual Core Processor i3-10110U (2.1GHz, 4.1GHz Turbo)

8GB Corsair 2133MHz SODIMM DDR4 (1 x 8GB)
Graphics Card
INTEL® HD GRAPHICS (CPU Dependant) - 1.7GB Max DDR4 Video RAM - DirectX® 12

Battery
UltraNote Series 36WH Lithium Ion Battery

Warranty
3 Year Standard Warranty (1 Month Collect & Return, 1 Year Parts, 3 Year Labour)
Chassis
Clevo NL51CU FHD (i3-10110U, FHD, 60Hz N4)

But I've looked around and found this:

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/compu...l-core-i5-512-gb-ssd-silver-10199737-pdt.html

Which boasts an i5 Processor and 2666MHz DDR4 RAM instead which is just a few extra £.

Ideally I'm hoping for something that will boost swiftly and preform with what I need it too, am I just blowing money against the wall or am I on the right tracks?

Thanks.

The Dell with the i5 is the better laptop.

£500 is a bit weird because in the 500-650 range you can buy good used laptops like an XPS (dunno what spec) or a 2015 MacBook pro if you come to the light side 😉

You’d have to force my cold dead hands open to receive a MacBook 😏 although I do know someone who is selling one!

Best ultrabooks going, windows can't get near it. But you can buy higher end windows laptops from yester year for good prices in that bracket. Something like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Razer-Blade-Stealth-13-3-inch-Notebook-Core-i7-16GB-RAM-512GB/223935153973?epid=22019932244&hash=item3423934735:g:SKIAAOSwSw5dpJR7

Its probably more Apple-fobia but I can’t deal with the thought of using anything but windows, except for my iPad..

Wouldn’t that Razer Stealth be bottle necked by a lack of a dedicated GPU? Like the price though!

The CPU won't be bottlenecked. You just won't have the GPU performance to play games on it, but it is fine for photoshop and web browsing.

The price looks real good right now, but there isn't a "buy it now" option. That laptop will probably end up selling for around 800 Quid by the end of the auction.

I use windows for gaming and MacOS for everything else XD Not a fan of the buggy mess W10 is.

You're not doing anything GPU intensive so shouldn't matter. If you were gaming or doing heavy video editing it'd be an issue.

been looking at the sold section and they go anywhere from 500-800 which is on the upper end to out of budget but will last longer and overall is a better machine.

I get it, but then wouldn’t that amount of RAM and CPU be overkill? I mean, the biggest thing for me really is to be able to turn it on and just to be able to browse, create and edit docs, etc without having to worry about lag or anything, when I say photoshop, it’s not very demanding photoshopping, just a casual hobby user!

If you want the system to last longer, 16GB RAM is needed. It doesn't take much going on a computer to hit the point where 8GB starts page swapping. For example my work desktop has Outlook, Slack, and 10 FireFox tabs open and I'm using 9GB out of 16GB RAM.

Mobile i7 is different that desktop i7. For the 8th Gen that means it is 4c/8t with a 1.8GHz base & 4GHz boost clock. https://ark.intel.com/content/www/u...-8550u-processor-8m-cache-up-to-4-00-ghz.html Also means it has a slightly better iGPU than the i5. Overall the CPU isn't overkill, it is more minimum require for a laptop to last a while.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have an i7 with that much RAM but other than it being an older gen CPU which has been used and abused, it’s going to cost a pretty penny elsewhere which I simply can’t afford.

I’ll keep an eye on it and see what it gets too but if it’s anywhere near the £600 mark then I’ll likely be buying something from the shelf with a load of bloatware, I can’t imagine having half of those tabs open at any given time, never mind 10 at once. It’s likely going to be something for me to upload photographs, music, occasional films when I’m travelling and posting on forums like here which I simply struggle to do on my iPad.

I donated my old Antec 902 with an i7 to my step father as he was trying to play X-Plane 11 on what could best be described as a hamster cage with a power supply plugged into it. Since then I’ve satisfied my gaming needs through a PlayStation when I’m not working or doing X Y Z.
