Buying New Laptop Dell vs ASUS

I've never owned a laptop before but need one to replace my current computer. I'd buy yet another tower, but I need the portability for school. I'd be using it for word processing, web browsing, gaming, and some background Java stuff. My price cap is around $1000. I've narrowed my choices down to two similarly priced machines. I understand that ASUS is a well regarded brand, but know nothing about dell laptops. My most pressing questions are: which machine is better for gaming and which is a better value?

The asus is the better choice as it is known for gaming and it has a better gpu which is very important for gaming. Also 4k is a bit overkill for games as the gpu can't run the games at the native resolution. Plus windows is not very good at handling high res screens as the icons become either very small or too big.

I myself would prefer the keypad but I do like the 4K screen. Yes the 4K would have no affect for gaming. If gaming is you number one concern the you might want the Nvidia GTX 860 at least. But that would push it over 1000.
