Hey everyone,
I wanted to get your guys' opinion on buying used consoles. I don't know of any way of testing the speed of the hard drive or doing any diagnostics on the system (whether it be Xbox or Playstation). I don't want to buy a system and have it crap out in a week. Any ideas?

PS I know that I give up the safety net of having a warranty when buying a used system, so don't give me that snarky comment saying just buy a new one lol

Where are you buying from? Some secondhand stores include some form of a warranty (at least in the UK, typically three months).

There's no real guarantee about an item's condition if buying from an individual, but if from ebay or similar then you should be protected in some form if the item isn't as described. You'd have to rely of customer feedback if it's available.

That said, I've bought a couple of used consoles in the past and never had an issue with them.

Depends what system, obviously you can’t just buy a SNES new. With the current consoles I’d just wait until the next gen launch and wait for the current gen price to tank, honestly you can get an Xbone S for under £200 now it’s not that much of an investment especially when you consider its also a 4K Blu-Ray player which go for the best part of £200 to start with.

Thanks for the reply. I am particularly looking at PS4 and Xbox One. I also realize the next gen consoles are coming out but I was really just looking for a way to run diagnostics of some sort, or other recommendations for making sure all is well with the system.

Can’t really, only can go on warranty provided by the seller, if they offer a decent prices extended warranty that might be worth investing in
