i have an acer travelmate p257 serie i want buy an universal caddy to add an hdd, i found two type 9.5mm and 12.7 mm, which one should buy ?

Are you talking about an external USB enclosure or something else? There is no "universal caddy" for laptops, if they use a caddy to hold the drive it would be specific to that model series. The size of it would depend on the hard drive you will be using.

Ah, to replace the optical drive. Simple to find out the size, remove the drive and measure the height. You will also then be able to see if the shape is the same, some laptop vendors change the shape of the drive casing from standard. There may be an adpater at the end you will need to remove and place on that bay, and possible the outside bezel also.
