Calibrating a New Monitor?

Does anyone have any tips for setting up the brightness and contrast on a new montor?

I picked up a Samsung 19" 955df, and am pretty happy with it for the price I paid, but I do have a question. In the middle of the screen in a small area it seems like the text in not quite as sharp as it is for the rest of the screen. Is there any way to correct this, or is it a defect? Maybe I'm just being over sensitive? Thanks.

I have a 955DF - I can't see that blurriness. I'm not sure, but maybe the "focus" will help.
