Can a blu ray drive play DVD ROMs ?

Just for future PC build, I'm gonna buy games in DVD ROM format. Put in the disc, install, remove the disc, PLAY.
so can a blu ray drive play DVD ROMs ? If not what drive can do it ?
It will mostly be an EXTERNAL drive the connects to the PC with USB.

Yes, blu ray will support DVD ROM.

Yes, optical media is backwards compatible. Bluray will handle bd, dvd, cd. If all you're planning to use it for are dvd rom's for games you may be better off with a dvd drive. They're typically much less expensive unless you plan to also play bluray discs.

Agreed, only get a Blu-Ray drive if you plan on a) watching Blu-Ray movies on your PC, or b) want to burn your home movie compilations onto a Blu-Ray disc to watch on another device. Otherwise, a DVD drive will be more than sufficient.
