I have an old dell optiplex 170L which I use strictly for online banking. Looking to make it run a little faster. Would I be able to install a ssd on this old machine. and if so what type of cable adapter would work best for connecting the power and data.

Well it's a P4 based system running on Intel 865GV chipset and the sata controller supports 3Gb.

So get yourself a cheap 64GB SATA II drive.

Even running XP, you would see a performance improvement, even if you run in IDE mode and not AHCI, but no TRIM.

While you can get the ssd to work, its not really going to run any faster. The OS & Applications will load much faster but the processor will still run at the same speed as before.

Disk intensive applications will seem faster but that only because they are no longer waiting long for disk access.

@damric - the Dell only has IDE so an ide/sata adapter would be needed or an IDE SSD (which are getting rare) will be required.
