OS Windows 10 (fully updated)
AMD Drivers (were out dated, explained below)
Ram 4GB DDR3 1600MHZ Jaws-x Memory x 2
Corsair CX750 WATT PSU
Gigabyte GA-990FXA Motherboard
HIS AMD R9 280x 3GB GPU

Just today as I was exiting world of wacraft my system crashed, this included my screen being blue/white lined. I restarted my PC, tested it by launching wow and @ log in crashed again, blue ish screen white lines.

uninstalled drivers, reinstalled newest ones and tested it on CS:GO. 2-3 minutes in crash grayish screen.

I check my windows DMP files with a program and it only found one from a year ago.

My question is, can a faulty PSU (going bad) cause a GPU to crash like that? my PC did NOT shut down and I've never had any issue Like this before.

The reason I'm asking is, I have another PSU and GPU. It's easier to replace the GPU and test it than the PSU. BUT since the GPU is smaller, it wont pull that much power so I may not know it's the PSU and I'll be using a smaller/weaker GPU.

any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks a ton for responding, I've never had this issue before and it's been years put together. I guess my first step will be to to replace the PSU and keep the GPU and see.

mine started doing that exiting blizz games,
8350+gigabyte ud7 +7950
thought it was power supply, turns out it was coming from the motherboard, on the ud7 there is a sata power input that goes towards pci power. the manual says it is to help power xfired cards.
once i plugged that in my problems went away.

the thing ran 3 years no problems, then all of a sudden a couple months ago it started crashing on blizz games, i have no proof, but the problems started on the first boot right after my power meter was changed from analog to a "smart meter"

As of right now I'm thinking I'll do this..

Replace my PSU with my 2nd one I have. If it still has this issue, I'll replace the GPU with the 2nd one I have, If it continues to have this issue.... then it must be something more like RAM or Motherboard, though from what I've read my Motherboard is top notch and I have no other issues other than when I try to launch a game or when I played CS:GO for 2-3 minute.

When you put on windows 10 did you just use the upgrade feature or was it a clean install with real windows 10 drivers? I would go to gigabytes website an download the windows 10 drivers as an easy fix before starting getting into hardware

I upgraded from 8.1 to 10 the week it was originally released and never had a single issue at all with anything. I will of course keep what you are saying as a possibility, you are saying that I should go to my mother boards main site, and download drivers for Windows 10?

replaced the PSU, after getting everything buttoned back up , it booted up. When I tried to launch a game same exact thing again. Green screen lock up.

So narrowing it down it seems to be a GPU issue. I'll try replacing that next.

i'm betting its mobo power delivery like my issue was

check the board and see if there is an extra sata power input. mine is just above the sata ports on the ud7
apparently gigabyte cheaped out on some of the power system components on some 990fx boards

Yes sir, ok so I replaced my r280x with a HD7770 and it booted up and worked fine , no crashes what so ever. So I'm gonna have to figure that the GPU went bad and it wasn't my PSU. BUT what I will do is in the future I'll go ahead and buy a new GPU along with a new PSU and replace them both @ one time.

That way I'll know for sure.

Thanks again for your support Tradesman1

Well, I replaced the original PSU with the other I had, the 280x did the same exact thing.

I put in the HD7770 and the game launch and shut down out crashing.

So what I will do do buy a new GPU and a new PSU @ the same time and replace both.

does your mobo have the extra power input for the pci slots?
what version of the 990fxa do you have? ud3? ud5? ud7? what revision?

if it has the extra input as my ud7 does just try it before you spend any more money

I didn't meant to select yours as answer >.>

but I'm waiting... I need a new cared in the next 2-3 weeks. so I hope newegg will get some 480's in with that time.

GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3

are you trying to say that the power cable leading to the Motherboard maybe faulty?

and if so, what would that be called, I have the manual open as a PDF and the only power anythings I see is the normal ATX power cable and the 24 pin Mother board power.

no i am saying there is known problems with the gigabyte motherboards power delivery system.

on the ud7 there is an additional plug you can plug a sata power cable into that supplements the motherboards delivery of power to the pci lanes. this was initially included to help power 3 and 4 card xfire .

if your pci lanes do not supply enough juice to the vid card, this additional power input on my motherboard goes to the pci lanes only.

in this image it is called the "atx 4 pin power connector for vga card needs.

you plug an extra sata power plug into the motherboard this helps power the vid card.

once i plugged it in, my problems stopped.

unfortunately i do not see one on the ud3.

i would take the board in somewhere and have the voltages on your lanes checked with a multimeter to see if they are providing enough board power.

as your problems were almost identical to mine, i am confident that this is something to have checked before you spend more on hardware.

I have a CORSAIR RMx Series RM650X coming in on Thursday. I'll Install it. I'm also gonna do a clean install of my R9 280x with the new hot fixed drivers.

I'm hoping that the issue was the PSU, I had a CX or CS 750 Bronze, so it's not a very reliable PSU to begin with.

The PSU I have in my system now that I tested the Card in, is a old Fatality 550w that lacks the correct pins to power the 2 8 pin HIS R9 280x. BUT the new PSU I'm getting does. So. If I'm lucky the issue was my PSU, and once I get the PSU installed and my 280x, everything will be fine.

If not I'll use my HD7770 till I can snag a RX 480.

Thank you for the reassurance sir, I'm actually just tempted to install the new PSU and wait till I can just get a new card, which I hope will be only a week or so.

I figured it was the best maneuver to go ahead and replace that low quality PSU with a gold standard quality PSU with rave reviews.

Now if only I can get a decently priced RX 480 that isn't a reference model.

Also I ran the Windows RAM test, no issues were discovered.
