Hash sum (MD5, SH1) is a must for the server, I see.

How do you know the checksum is changed or wrong? That is key to the whole question.

Valid point. But also, you don't usually expect normal people of making checksums databases of their files, it's more commonly used on web pages where iso files can be downloaded.

There are ways to overcome this issue, e.g. checksums of checksums, or use two checksums by different methods on same file so that when testing a file afterwards then if both checksums fail then the corruption is very likely to be occurred in the file itself.

Also must mentioned the possibility for a fault in a tiny checksum file compared to the possibility for bit failure in a multi-gigabytes file are pretty far from each other.
