on a i5-4590 it says memory supported only DDR3-1333/1600. can i use a z97 board so i can utilize higher speed RAM like DDR3-1866/2133 with XMP?

thanks.

Yes it should, even the unlocked k haswell cpu's say they recommend 1333mhz-1600mhz ram, intel has always been very conservative with their memory recommendations but from what I have seen they still work fine with much faster memory.

However if you don't already have a Z97 board I would not recommend you go out and buy one just to support faster memory, i'm not sure what you use your computer for but I can see how that would be worth it in any scenario.

thanks. is for gaming, since faster RAM does improve min FPS in some games. used Haswell parts seem to be cheaper now, while unlocked CPUs are still quite expensive new. but yea this would need a Z board and high speed DDR3 RAM. just thinking about possible upgrades for Haswell 4590, or wait for next gen.

on Skylake at least the min is DDR4 2133 for non Z, faster than DDR3 1600.
