Can a old HDD be the cause for low fps?

So i have this 4 Y/O Asus x555ld laptop. Its far from perfect but it does the job that i need it to do. Then its HDD (HDD SATA 1TB 5400RPM 2.5") died and i had the laptop stored for some months with no use.
A friend of mine who has an old laptop gave me his HDD ( it doesnt have the label in it for specific details but its a seagate 250gb ) and i managed to put it to work. However with this new HDD all the simple games that i used to play with no problem are way too slow ( what i used to play at 60 fps now has decreased to 20/30's). Do you guys think buying a new HDD would solve the problem?

PS: all drivers up to date. HDD was formated and OS was reinstalled
