can a thumb drive be used in place of an HDD if it is removed

i would like to know if i can use a pen drive in place of an HDD, and if i can , do i remove the original drive or leave it in place, thank you.

You can but it's much slower than HDD (except if we're talking about USB 3.0 USB stick). What are you trying to accomplish?
