Can a virtual web gateway fail open?

Hi guys,

Hope you can help me on this:

If I have a virtual web gateway on a esx host doing inline traffic inspection. If this virtual device fails, is there a way for it fail open so that traffic is not disrupted or is it only possible on a physical hardware appliance? Thanks!

From what I understand you can only port mirror on a physical port not virtual, traffic doesnt pass through the mirrored port.
