Regarding your avatar image...I most likely worked on that exact jet. That is from the 388FW Hill AFB.
Unlikely you could damage the cable itself. You can damage the ends...or more the internal connection between the wires and the pins. I suppose you could wear out the surface of the connection from plugging it in and out but you would also wear out the jacks in your equipment when you look at it that way.
As stated it is cheap to replace a simple patch cable. You could test by ping the router IP from your PC. Some routers will display the error counts on the ports and that would be a indication of a faulty connection. There is also some way to display the port errors on a PC but it is been so long I forget.
