[SOLVED] Can an old PCI sound card work in a PCIe 4x slot?

As most of us know, modern mobos do not have the good, 'ole PCI slot. Not a single one.

I'm in need to install an external audio card (onboard audio got fried), but as you may have guessed by the title: there is no correct slot on the mobo.

So... can I actually install a PCI card in a PCIe 4x slot and not risk any damage?

You'd have to get a converter, like https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-PCI-Express-Adapter-Card/dp/B0024CV3SA

Otherwise no. The card won't fit in the slot, the pins won't make contact (PCI uses wider pins), among other things.
