Can damaged or loose peripheral cables like HDMI damage internal hardware?

Yes, if the cable has a short in it, or two pins are crossed and you plug that cable in, and a pin that is not expecting voltage get's voltage, it could short out your video card or something else.

I seated my vid card incorrectly once and it sparked and burned a pin right off.

Im wondering if any damage can be done to components if the HDMI cable is plugged in like halfway which is what happened to me by accident

It could be possible that the cable torqued the plug and dissected an internal connection... but that is just a thought. Is the HDMI connection on the component seem loose?
