Greetings
My board is Gigabyte z87 d3hp (with windows 10 pro)
Tried to add WD 6TB and nothing can see the disk. It is of course unallocated but I expected to see it in, say, administrative tools --> computer management --> disk management and then to define partition and format as GPT.
Since I saw nothing my conclusion is that my board does not support 6TB (I already work with a 3TB)
Can anyone help?
How does one start to allocate and format a new disk?
is there a rebootable I should have to do such jobs from?
thank you

Solution
Z87 is newer than the H61 so you should be fine. Z87 is part of the LGA 1150 which replaced the LGA 1155. H61 chipset was part of LGA 1155. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1155 and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1150)
I have a Z77 (older than Z87) board with a 6TB HDD installed an it works fine so I think your issues may be something else.

Did you try mdd1963 recommendation and removed the 3TB HDD and plug the 6TB drive into the same cable and same sata port that the 3 TB drive used to be plugged into?
urbanrider: the BIOS is in UEFI mod and the new 6TB doesn't show
mdd1963: the 3TB is seen maybe. but maybe not all sata sockets/cables are the same.
thank you

urbanrider: the link is relevant to msi but with z87 chipset. my board is gigabyte maybe it is different.
the new 6TB is WD black. WD says the board must have chipset H61 and above. I don't know if Z87 qualifies
thank you

Solution
urbanrider: this is the info I was looking for and was unable to find in gigabyte site
now I replace every cable I have in everysocket (almost except the ssd where the system is) and it was empty in BIOS
so I'll let the lab solve this problem
thank you all
