Hi all. Very very noob question. Basically due to having to work from home (3D GPU rendering), I have an old X79 based PC with a TX650 PSU. It already contains a GTX 970 but there are no further PCI cables coming from the PSU (just some 4 pin female ones I think are 'Molex')

I'd like the 970 to stay powering my monitors and viewport and add a GTX Titan my friend lent me as a Cuda rendering device

My question is, if I wanted to add a the titan to the third PCI slot, can I just buy Molex to PCI adapters and plug it in?

Thanks for your help

Welcome to the Forums 😀

no, bad bad idea.
Molex is designed for low power 12V devices (CD-roms, Hard drives, lights) if you were to plug in a GPU that consumed 85W the adapter would work only needing to supply the 10W molex is safely capable of the other 75 coming from the slot.
a titan would draw so much current through the adapter that if the PSU did not trip from the protections, the adapter wire itself would heat up, glow red and maybe melt.
if the PSU does not have the PCIe cables you require, you require a new PSU

"if the PSU does not have the PCIe cables you require, you require a new PSU"

This answers my question brilliantly. Thanks for the heads up! Looks like I'll be taking the 970 out and using just the Titan. Probably wouldn't make much diff anyway!
