can i add extra 2 or 4GB in my motherboard

i have compaq presario cq45 laptop having 2GB of RAM and intel pentium(1.7GHz) based precessor(64-bit) i have 2 slots of RAM chip in motherboard in which 1 is 2GB and another one is empty i wanna add 4 or 2 GB of RAM into it.
i am having trouble to run havier programs and sometimes laptop hanging issue so
is it possible to run it fine according to my laptop configuration

Yes you can, but make sure that you have the "same RAM". If you use different RAM, it could have a compatibility issue which makes your laptop not to run.

Further info -- each slot can take up 4GB (so 8GB total) just in case you want to add more.

But you need to be running 64-bit Windows to gain any benefit from having more than 4GB RAM installed.
32-bit Windows won't "see" anything in excess of 4GB (actually it will only see around 3.2GB).

but if i add 4 gb in my remaining port then it could make problem in 1.7GHz processor
so in short if i add total 6 gb "same RAM" then it makes problem due to processor ?
