Question Can I add latest NVMe SSD to my Asus Z97-K ?

MY build which is a bit old but still good for me:
Intel i7-4790 k
Asus Z97-K
2*8 BG Gskill Ram
Asus STRIX GTX 960
128 GB samsung SSD
1 Tb WD HDD

The SSD storage space is becoming a issue and i want to upgrade it to 1 TB SSD since the rates have gone down now.
Can i add the latest available Nvme SSD to my M2 slot. ( It would be fine if SSD performance on the current motherboard is less)
Or do i need to add an adapter to install it ?
Idea is to keep at least the SSD for my future system upgrades if possible.

Any suggestion which would be the best SSD for this board with max speed possible ?

Technically most mobos should support Sata connections (Sata SSD) which is basically on par with NVMe/M.2 speeds.
Link here to the official Asus support site. (Goto the document Z97-K_Device_report and search for SSD in Find (usually Ctrl + F on most browsers)
If you do get Sata try ensure its Sata 6gbps not 3gbps

Asus Z97-K motherboard has M.2 slot. But it is PCIE 2.0 x2 (could be x4, but x2 is more likely).
That means - regular PCIE 3.0 x4 NVME drive would operate with four times less bandwidth, than max possible.
Instead of normal 3500MB/s you'd get ~800MB/s.
SATA 3.0 speed is not very far from that ~500MB/s.

Just get a regular 2.5" SATA ssd. Not worth going with NVME.
May be only, if you intend to reuse it on your next more modern pc.
Samsung 970 Evo is a good option.

Just get a 2.5" SATA III SSD.
NVMe support on Z97 era boards was spotty. As above, it is likely that it is only PCIe 2.0 x2.
It will work, but it will be no faster than a SATA SSD.

You'd see zero difference.

Yes you can put a pcie 4 ssd in the m.2 slot it will run at some lower speed.

It might be a good idea to update the bios first.
