Can I use a RAID card just for extra internal SATA ports?

If so, how can I boot 1 hard drive by itself off of one. The motherboard's SATA ports went bad which is why I am using the PCI RAID card.

So you have set "RAID" as the first boot device in the main motherboard's BIOS.

Are you certain the motherboard knows that this "RAID" device is the add-on RAID controller and not a on-board RAID device?
Is there any device such as "SCSI add-on controller" that you can set as the boot device?

In most motherboards I have used, I would need to select a "SCSI controller" as the boot device in order to boot from a add-on RAID controller.
