Can i change my cpu but keep the same motherboard?

I just bought a GTX 970 and my ancient cpu bottle necks it i guess by a lot. I have no idea if i would need to change my mother board to support a new type of cpu? I was thinking of matching my GTX 970 with an intel i5 4690k.

This is my current old CPU: AMD Phenom(tm) II X2 511 Processor (2 ZCPUS) 3.4 ghz. Is there any way i can find out the socket of my mother board?

Once you are changing from an AMD processor to an Intel, then you will need to change your motherboard as they are two total different brand processors which have different sockets types. No Intel processor will fit in an AMD motherboard.. Just to let you know , the i5 4690k would be an excellent upgrade and match for your GTX 970 , just that you will need a new motherboard.. To be exact, you will need a motherboard with a LGA 1150 socket type..

Alright any idea on what motherboard i should buy? edit: or should i buy an amd processor like the AMD FX-8350 which is 40 dollars cheaper than an i5?

I am not sure if they would be cheaper come Black Friday...In select a motherboard, do you plan on overclocking ?

I don't really know about over clocking so i guess no.
