i have a Dlink N300 modem cum router...i have recently changed my ISP , my new ISP provides a cable with ethernet plu on it (RJ-45)..my router has a RJ- 11 jack and 4 RJ45 ports on the rear of it ....is there a possiblity to use this router cum modem for wireless or do i have to purchase a new dedicated router only (without modem).

It is very unusual for a ISP to directly deliver a rj45 ethernet connection to your house. Since ethernet can only go 100 meter and the distances to the ISP is usually many kilometers it doesn't work. They could though have some device that is within the 100m limit that is converting it to another form of media like fiber or cable or something else.

So I would ask the ISP if your connection is ethernet or is something else. There is a small chance it is DSL delivered on a rj45 rather than rj11.

If it is ethernet you may or may not need a router it depends on the ISP and how they have configured things. First of course is to plug a single PC directly into the connection and make sure it works. After than you can try your...
Update:
You keep implying it has a MODEM, however it only appears to be a ROUTER to me so you'd need a MODEM as well.

A MODEM either works via the PHONE line or through CABLE depending on what service you use.

So you'd for example need a MODEM and the input would be the RJ-45 phone cable, and the output would go to the Router (an Ethernet cable).

To be clear, you need either:
a) a MODEM + ROUTER, or
b) a "GATEWAY" device with MODEM/ROUTER in one unit

Other:
An "RJ45" is not an Ethernet cable either. It plugs into the phone jack:

An "Ethernet" cable looks similar but is slightly larger:

Hi,

i used this router cum modem before with a telephone wire and it worked fine , my desktop was wired with the ethrnet wire from teh router to the desktop and my laptop and phones used to work on the wireless, however i have changed my ISP now , and the wire which comes into my house now has an ethernet connector on the end of it which i cant put on my dlink n300 router/modem as at the rear end it has a RJ 11 port and 4 ethrenet ports on it to connect to other devices.
now could i connect the ISP wire into ethrnet 1 and use the other three 2,3,4 for other devices , would it work or would i have to purchase another router where in teh rear there is an ethernet port where i can connect my ISP RJ45 connector cable in it.

First of course is to plug a single PC directly into the connection and make sure it works. After than you can try your current router. You need to disable the DHCP. You can then see if it allows multiple machines. You are in effect using your router as a switch or AP.

If they only allow a single machine to be connected you will need a new router.
